Previously on Why?
JO
It is gonna
be okay
BANKOLE
What if the court rules against us the way
appeal court did?
JO
Then we do
regular trial
BANKOLE
My sister
will go to jail with regular trial
JO
I am sure she knows you have tried your best
*
BANKOLE
Sister y….
IMADE
Indulge me
Bankole
BANKOLE
He let you
rot in jail for two years, so no, he is not coming
IMADE
He didn’t
pu…
BANKOLE
You won’t have had to stay in here for two years if he had intervened
and done something but he didn’t
*
JO
I should be
asking you that question, what is your problem? Am sorry but does marriage vows
mean nothing to people anymore
BANKOLE
What are
you talking about?
JO
I can’t
believe you have the audacity to be waiting for your first love’s call when you
are with me. I don’t just understand why you need that woman’s approval so much
BANKOLE
I don’t
know what you are talking about
JO
She abandoned you when you needed her the most and here you are waiting for her call like a dog waiting for its mistress to tell him that he did a good job
*
IMADE
Oh my God! She
is waiting for Bankole to bring her Akara
WEMIMO
Bingo!
IMADE
You should
not lead my brother on you know, he needs to forget you as soon as possible
ANN
I am not
leading him on
IMADE
Then what
will you call this?
*
ANN
For the
first time tonight, Wemimo is making sense. You have gat talent, girl, you
should harness it
IMADE
Why do you
guys make me repeat myself, designing is a hobby for me. I want to be a
guidance counsellor
ANN
Yes, our
guidance counsellor
IMADE
Why are you
sounding like a guidance counsellor is not a good thing, it will be an honour
for me to guide a person with the words of my mouth
ANN
I have
heard you, Madam guidance counsellor, kindly pass me the water bottle next to
you
*
WEMIMO
Why are
trying so hard to make my life so difficult
CHAIRMAN
Excuse me
WEMIMO
I am trying
to live a life not linked to your name or anything that has to do with you,
why are you making it so hard for me?
CHAIRMAN
You must
think because I let you use your mother’s name, that means you are free from
performing your obligations to this family. Well, let me tell you something young
man, you are not free, you are my son and it is high time to start acting like
one
*
JO
Bankole,
you…
BANKOLE
I used to
be so jealous of their friendship so bad that I tried so hard to have what they
had. They were so close, how could this happen to them?
JO
How about
we get your sister out and we find a way to fix them
BANKOLE
With all
that have happened, I don’t know if there is anything left to fix. When she
needed their help the most, they turned their backs on her. I don’t think I can
fix anything
*
IMADE
Whoever you
are changes nothing about you. To me, you are still the jackass who humiliated
my friend and still has no decency to apologise but instead is still lying
through his teeth
MICHEAL
I di...
IMADE
You are
exactly the kind of guy I hate, a guy who flaunts with his parent’s money and
then goes ahead to oppress the poor. You guys make me sick
*
ANN
Then you
can be rest assured that she is good hands
WEMIMO
You said it
yourself, we don’t marry for love. Micheal is the heir to his father’s company,
picking a life partner is not going to be his choice. So, all he is ever going
to do is play with her and hurt her feelings
ANN
Are you saying
this because of Imade’s feeling or because of yours?
WEMIMO
What are
you talking about?
ANN
Imade is
not here, you can stop bullshitting me too. I know you are in love with her
*
IMADE
You think I
don’t know that
ANN
Oh! You do?
Because that is not what I am seeing, before me sits a woman in love with a man
that can never marry her
IMADE
I know and
I know what I am doing
WEMIMO
You do?
IMADE
Yes, I do.
Remember, when it comes to relationship matter, think with your head and not
with the heart and that is exactly what I am doing
*
MICHEAL
Come on Made,
I know you like me, stop torturing us and let us date
IMADE
Torture?
MICHEAL
What else
will you call this? We are super into each other and the only reason why we are
not together is because of you
IMADE
My friends
say you are only playing me and you are not going to marry me
MICHEAL
Oh my God,
your friends again and why are we talking about marriage
IMADE
Because I
can only be with someone who will marry me and my friends are not wrong
*
ANN
So all that
tantrum was about this, for us to accept Micheal, oh my dear, Imade
IMADE
Please, I
love him
ANN
We know
that already
WEMIMO
Imade, this
man will only break your heart
IMADE
You both
are rich, you should understand him
WEMIMO
My father
is the rich man not me and because I am from a rich family that is why I know
that you shouldn’t be with Micheal and he is never, ever going to marry you
*
IMADE
You
promised not to break up with me
MICHEAL
That was
lie, I can’t let anything happen to you
IMADE
I said I
don’t care about what happens to me, I can take anything
MICHEAL
This is not
just about you, your family is involve too. Are you okay with your family
getting hurt because of us because I am not okay with that?
IMADE
Micheal,
please don’t do this
*
ANN
You will be
okay, heartbreak sucks, I know that. Been here done that but at the end of the
day, you will forget about him and find someone else
IMADE
I am not
like you, Ann, I can’t just start sleeping around after a heartbreak
ANN
I am
offended by that but you are in a greater pain than I am, so I am letting it go
*
MADAM
BABADE
Mama Nurse,
kini Imade se? (Mama Nurse, what did
Imade do?)
ELDERLY
NURSE
Imade ti
loyun ose mefa (Imade is six weeks
pregnant)
*
MADAM
OMOLOJA
But without
you in the picture
WEMIMO
What?
IMADE
What does
that even mean?
MADAM
OMOLOJA
It means
another woman will raise your child which in this case is Micheal’s fiancée, it
means your child will have no connection with you whatsoever, it means your
child will never call you mother
*
IMADE
Please
marry me and be the father of my child
WEMIMO
Imade!
IMADE
Please I am
begging you….I wish it didn’t come to this but I have thought about it for a long
time. I know this is my mistake, my burden and not yours but I can’t let my
child go through what I went through growing up. Imagining who my father is, if
he is a tall or short, fair or dark, fat or slim man. Thinking of the reason why he
didn’t stay to be my father and eventually hating him. That is a terrible thing
for a child to go through and I can’t do that to my child…. Maami has gone
through a lot in this life, becoming a mother without achieving anything in
life is shame enough for her, I won’t live in her house as unmarried woman
*
IMADE
Just like
that?
WEMIMO
Yes, just
like that
IMADE
Even if I
can’t love you?
WEMIMO
Even if you
can’t love me?
IMADE
I am in love with Micheal, Wemimo…and I am trying so hard not to think about him but I am failing at it. So even if I can’t love you the way a wife is suppose to love her husband, will you still marry me?
*
QUEEN
I was
starting to see potentials in you, the potential I love to see in my children,
the potentials that are needed to lead The Company into the next level of
greatness and I was ready to groom those potentials but is this all you amount
to, leaving your family because of a girl
ANN
Wemimo, she
is not worth it
CHAIRMAN
If you walk
out that door with that girl and you marry her, consider yourself disowned, I
will remove your name from the family registry
*
IMADE
Yes, I do
WEMIMO
Yes, I do
EPISODE 1
Stole your dream
THE PRESENT
INT. BANKOLE’S HOUSE-
MORNING
An older
Bankole sits on table in his study looking at the name plate in his hand
pouting. On the name plate is inscribed WADA and BABADE, Bankole runs his
fingers over this inscription with a nostalgic look
Jo comes in
and finds her husband in his position. She sees the longing look on his face as
he holds the name plate and she does not look so pleased
JO
Come on
Bankole, we need to go
Bankole makes no move to
leave
JO
Bankole,
come on, we need to talk to more witness
BANKOLE
Do you
remember when I got this?
Showing her the nameplate
and Jo becomes impatient
JO
Bankole,
now is not the time for you to be crying over your shattered dream
BANKOLE
Please Jo,
please I need five minutes. Five minutes to cry over my shattered dream and I
need you to listen to me
Jo relaxes
when she sees Bankole’s sad state and she points to nameplate
JO
When you
became a junior partner… you got that when you became a senior partner
Bankole smiles sadly
BANKOLE
Yes
He drops
the nameplate and picks an old rolled up white cardboard and stretches it to
Jo. She opens the cardboard and see WADA and BABADE written boldly with a
marker on the cardboard
JO
What is
this?
BANKOLE
Ann gave
this to me when I just started. Fresh out of Harvard law, I was ready to
conquer the world and yet, I flopped my first case
JO
You mean
like lost?
BANKOLE
Yes, a
medical malpractice case. Then, I had to console the grieving mother why I
failed to give her dead son the justice he deserved
JO
You never
told me that
BANKOLE
Probably
because I was ashamed, Ann saved me that day
JO
How?
BANKOLE
While I
might have failed to win the case, Ann give them the settlement money we were
hoping to get from the hospital
JO
(Scoff) Had
it been in Nigeria, I might have said there was something in it for her
She hands the cardboard back
to him
BANKOLE
Well, there
was. She blackmailed me with it, giving them the money in return for coming to
work for her in Nigeria
JO
And you
did?
BANKOLE
Yeah, that
family is doing really well because of the money she gave them and at that
time, losing my first case broke my spirit. I never wanted to enter a courtroom
ever again
JO
But you did
BANKOLE
Yeah,
because of Ann. She forced me back into the court room and after I won my first
case in Nigeria, she gave me this cardboard
Holding the cardboard in his
hand
BANKOLE
And told me
to work for her for a few years, after which she promised to make me a named
partner …. If things have gone according to plan, I would be a named
partner of WADA and BABADE now
JO
Why are you
telling me this?
BANKOLE
I don’t
know…. I know you don’t like her but she made me who I am today. What I learnt
at UNILAG and Harvard did not even come close to what she taught me. Every
trick, every loophole in every law book there is, she taught me. She was
devoted to me….at least to my career, she was devoted
JO
As one
lawyer to another, she is a badass and am grateful to her for making you a
badass lawyer too but I don’t like the control she has on you. Look at you
crying over her
BANKOLE
I am not
crying over her
JO
Yes, you
are, you are crying over the fact that you are no longer with her, over the
fact that you don’t get to work with her anymore, over the fact she can’t pat
your head and tell you that you did a good job after you win a case
Jo sees the
confirmation look on Bankole’s face and she sighs sadly
JO
You know,
you and your sister are not exactly different, she spent her whole life
pleasing her husband, doing what he wants and you are doing exactly the same
thing, pleasing a woman who is not even yours
BANKOLE
That is not
fair
JO
Maybe but I
am right. That woman stole your dream from you, if she had helped your sister
two years ago, you would be a named partner now and not fighting an impossible
case. If she loved you, she won’t try to make you turn your back on your
sister. She has been using you all your life, stop mistaking that for devotion
Bankole stands up and adjust
his tie
BANKOLE
You were
right, now is not the time for me to be crying about my shattered dreams
He walks out of the study
with Jo behind him
Next on Why?
WEMIMO
You hurt
me, Ann
ANN
I should
have trusted your judgement
WEMIMO
It is not
even about you trusting my judgement, it is about you going over my head to my
family because I won’t do what you want. I thought it was us against them,
finding out that it was me against you and my family broke my heart…. You
betrayed me, Ann
ANN
How can I
fix it? How can I fix us?
