CHAPTER FIFTY EIGHT
Save yourself
A loud yelp of jubilation erupted inside Parc de Princes when the referee blew the final whistle PSG emerged qualifiers for the Champions league final. The coaches and other players on the bench all trooped to greet the eleven players on the pitch and in solidarity, they are bowed in front of the their fans. Appreciating them for standing with them.
To support Marcus, Fatima suggested we watch the match from the stadium instead of watching from the TV. I got so used to watching Kylian playing from the TV that I never actually went to the stadium to see him when my curfew was lifted. It was my first time watching and my nigga and his colleague didn’t disappoint me.
I watch Fatima and Joy hug their husbands, no doubt happy for Marcus. I am happy for Marcus too but I am mostly happy for my husband. He needed that win after the disappointing Euros Qualifiers. The players went round the stadium clapping and when they got to the VIP section of the stadium, I couldn't help myself but to clap and jump in excitement when Kylian locked eyes with me. His eyes widen with joy and raised his hands clapping harder, never talking his eyes off of me for a second till he and his team had to move on
A sharp pain eroded my head and I winced in pain. This has been happening for sometimes, I have been taking painkiller but it just comes back again. The night times were the hardest, it usually felt like a war was been fought on my head. My BP is probably too high or I am coming down with my ever-occurring Malaria
“Are you okay?” Fatima who was next to me asked
“I have been having headache for some days”
“I have some painkillers in the car, come let go” Fatima said and I nodded. But instead of the two of us leaving, the whole group decided to follow us
“We will be back soon” Fatima muttered
“The match is over anyway” Joy stated
“We should wait and congratulate Marcus, he will love that” Fatima pointed out
Abdul brought out his cell phone at that point and said “I will text him to meet us at the parking lot” and with that, we all left the VIP booth
Fatima opened her car and brings out the painkillers from the glove compartment. Abdul and David both leaned on David’s car chatting while Joy stayed with us
“Thank you” I appreciated her and then went to my car for a bottled water. I threw the drug in my mouth and gulped water to sent it down. I held my head as another sharp pain shot through my head again.
“Don’t you think you need to see a doctor, if the headache is not going, it probably means there is something serious going on” Joy muttered
“No need for all that, I probably have high blood pressure or malaria”
“And that is not good enough reason to see a doctor right? People die from those illness you know” Joy countered
“No need to get all serious, Joy, I will take anti-malaria when I get home and I will rest. That is just what I need”
“You are no longer in Nigeria, Bewaji, you can’t be self medicating”
At that moment, my headache intensified and I prayed to God solemnly to shut Joy’s up in any way possible. I hate doctors, they always think they are better than others. Since Joy was cool when we first met, I thought she would be different
“I know you are a doctor, Joy” I gritted my teeth, as the intensity of the pain in my head multiplied “But you don’t know my body like I do, so when I tell you that what I need is anti-malaria and rest, you need to believe me”
“But….” Joy started but she was cut off when David who shouted “See the champion!”
I looked at the direction David pointed to and saw Marcus coming toward us with his hands in hispocket like the champion he is. I silently thanked God for bringing him when I needed a distraction the most
“Champion, you were amazing today” Abdul commented as him and David met Marcus halfway, shaking him and hugging him
“Thank you, Thank you” the super star stated with a bright smile on his face
“So, how are we celebrating?” I asked with a groan
“Are you okay?” Marcus asked with concern and moved closer to me
“Just a little bit of headache, so, where are we going?” I diverted the conversation from me fast
“I can get us a reservation at Genesis” Abdul answered pulling his phone out of his pocket
“That will be great” Joy agreed
“I haven’t been there, I don’t mind” I added
“As much as that sounds, I need some Madam Black’s magic right now” Marcus said
“That is also not bad” Abdul let out
“Okay, Madam Black it is” I chuckled in excitement for the hot broth of pepper soup I was about to eat
“Bewa, let me drive” Marcus suggested as my other friends got into their cars. I looked at Marcus in bewilderment wondering why he would make such suggestion “You have headache remember?” he explained
“Oh! But what about your car?”
“I will come back for it after I drop you at the port”
“Okay” I handed the key to him
We found Madam Black’s restaurant closed when we got here. I looked disappointed but Marcus looked worried as he tried calling her which is understandable. I mean she did drop the bombshell that she was leaving on him. I haven’t told him about my acquisition of her recipe, I didn’t know how to brush the subject without telling him who my husband was and lying to him just didn't feel right
Judging from the concerned look Marcus was wearing, she hasn’t told him either
“She is not picking up” Marcus mumbled looked more worried
“I can still get us that reservation at Genesis” Abdul muttered
“I was really looking forward to that pepper soup” David mentioned in a low voice
“Me too” Fatima sighed
“How about I host you?” I blurted out
“What?” Joy exclaimed as the whole group looked at me
“Look…” I started “I can’t promise Madam Black’s magic but I can put some fish and pepper in your stomach tonight. So, what do you say? We go to my place and I make you some pepper soup” I suggested with a bright smile
Are you sure about this? You are inviting them into your world
I am, they are my friends
“Don’t you live in Eureka city?” Joy retorted and I nodded. My cell phone rang at that point and I saw Alice. I dropped the call
“We have work tomorrow, we don’t all have our business in our home” Joy countered
“We will be honoured” Fatima replied.
“What? I thought you said you have an appointment tomorrow morning” Joy stated in surprise
“I can push it, Bewaji is inviting us to her house for the first time, it will be rude to say no”
“What about you, Abdul?” I asked and my phone rang again. It was Alice again and I dropped it
“I am my own boss” he accepted my invitation. I nodded and looked at David
“I don't have shift tomorrow” he said
“Well, I have a shift tomorrow” Joy complained
“Don’t you want to see Bewa’s world, she is inviting us for the first time” her husband tried to convince her
“Come on, Joy, you know you want to come” I held her trying to convince her
“Fine” she agreed and I jumped up in excitement
“Are you sure about this, Bewa?” Marcus asked
“Yes, it is time” I smiled. My phone rang again, seeing Alice as the caller again, I picked the call.
“Enough, Alice, I am on my way home, stop hounding me” I yelled and cut the call
“Woo! Who ate you bread?” Joy taunted
“Let go”
“Jesus!” Joy exclaimed when she saw my house. The other’s had their mouth opened as they alighted from the boat. Abdul looked me with bewilderment
“Who is your husband exactly” he asked.
“Come on” I said with a bright smile
With the pain in my head gone, I ushered my friends to the front of my building. It didn’t seem proper to have them enter through the back door.
“I knew your husband was rich but I didn’t know he was this rich” Marcus stated as he walked next to me.
I opened the door and Alice hurried towards me in anger but stopped in her track when she saw my friends
“What the hell, Bewaji” She blurted out showing her disapproval
“I know you disapprove but I don’t care, this is my fucking house and I can bring anyone I want to it”
“No one…” she trailed off as she balled her hands into a fist in frustration “No one is saying this is not your house but if you had picked my call, I would have…. it does not matter anymore, does it? You see me as your enemy when all I have ever done is try to be your friend and save you from yourself”
“I didn’t ask for your….” I tried to bite back
“Look who is here” A familiar voice said and I froze up. At that moment, it seemed like the floor should open up and I should just enter. I don’t need to see the face the voice belonged to know it is Kylian’s
He came into view and I heard a loud gasp behind me
“If you had let me speak over the phone instead of yelling at me, I would have told that Kylian was around with his friends” Alice let out with an annoyed tone. Hakimi, Dembele and Bryce showed up behind him
“Marcus’s girlfriend?” Dembele pointed out in a curious tone
I told you she was a friend, but you just had to make her an enemy
“Your husband’s name was Kylian right?” Joy asked and I looked back to look at my friends but the one that stood out most to me was Marcus
He looked at me with an expression I couldn't decipher but it was unpleasant. Just like that, my forgotten headache came crawling back with full blow
“You got yourself into this mess” I looked back at Alice who was talking “Save yourself this time” and she walked back inside
What the fuck just happened?
