EPISODE 74
Obssessed
I walked down the brightly lit hallway, the white lights humming softly above me. Each step I took echoed against the polished floors as I made my way toward the front door. When I stepped outside, the world shifted. The night was dark, and the moon hung overhead, casting a pale silver glow that blended with the artificial lights around the grounds. Together, they painted the quiet scene in soft contrasts of shadow and light, as if the night itself was gently illuminated just enough to be felt.
“Bon nuit! (Good night),” Fabio, one of the security guards at the training camp, greeted.
“Bon nuit, Fabio. Au revoir.” I nodded my head at him as I walked past and entered the almost empty parking lot, where my driver was waiting for me in the car. I got into the car, and the engine ignited as we moved. I brought out my cell phone, which I had switched off before training but was too tired to turn back on because I went straight to sleep afterward.
The moment I turned it on, a series of messages came in, but several were from Alice. My heart dropped at the thought of something happening to Bewa. I tried to call her back, but her call came through immediately, and I picked it up.
“Where have you been? I’ve been calling you,” Alice barked in my ears.
“Why are you calling? Is everything okay?” I asked, ignoring the tone she used while speaking to me.
“Have you seen Bewaji?”
“Bewa… why would I be seeing Bewaji? Please tell me you didn’t lose her again.”
“Fuck!” she groaned loudly. “We received the results of her test today, and it was not good.”
“What are you talking about?” I questioned in confusion.
“I can’t tell you what the test result says because she wants to tell you herself.”
What is she talking about? Lola told me Bewa was fine and had no fertility issues.
“Alice, what are you talking about? What do you mean her test results are not good?”
“It does not matter. We need to find her.”
“You lost her again.”
“She needed a moment, Kylian. She just received bad news and needed some time to herself to process it. So yes, I gave her privacy because it is the humane thing to do.”
“But all you had to do was make her think she was alone. You were never to take your eyes off her. After everything she has done, how can you trust her not to go crazy again?” I lamented.
“Because she is in a better place now, and I am not comfortable with deceit. I am not you or Frances.”
I closed my eyes and sighed loudly at her accusation.
“We need to find her, Kylian. She is not picking my calls.”
“Fine, I will call her.” I dropped the call and dialed her number, but it was not going through. Then I called another number.
“Hey, Lucas, please, I need you to trace a phone number,” I informed my PI as I looked out through the car window. “I need to find the owner immediately.” Then suddenly, I caught sight of someone who looked like my wife coming out of a restaurant.
“Stop!” I yelled at my driver, who slowly parked somewhere close to the restaurant. I looked back to get a better view and saw that the woman was indeed my wife. A wave of calm flooded my heart as my muscles relaxed. I placed my hand on the car lever to open it.
“Where are you going, sir?” Antoine, my driver and bodyguard, asked me.
“My wife is outside that restaurant,” I said, pointing to the restaurant behind our car.
He removed his seatbelt. “I will get her.”
“No,” I disagreed. “She does not know you. She might not want to come with you.”
“But you can’t just go out there with your face in the open.”
He was right about that. There was paparazzi everywhere.
“Get me a nose mask,” I ordered him.
“But sir....”
“I just want to bring her to the car,” I explained. “It shouldn’t take more than a minute.” Then I covered my nose with the mask and put on a cap for temporary disguise. I opened the door and walked toward my wife.
“Bewa,” a voice called to her, and I looked at the owner of the voice and saw Marcus, my teammate. What the actual fuck?
He moved closer to her, and my wife smiled brightly at him. How did these two know each other? My eyes narrowed as I watched, then she burst into laughter at what he said to her. Suddenly, my chest felt tight, like an invisible weight pressing against my ribs, and my mind raced, trying to understand what I was looking at. Then he led her to his car, and I turned my face away as their car passed me.
I hurried back to my car and yelled at Antoine.
“Follow that car!”
"What?"
“I said, follow that car!”
Antoine did as told, and after about an hour, we drove into the familiar port that I had taken a few weeks ago to get to Bewa’s house. Antoine found a place with a clear view to park. Marcus had a few words with her after they left the car but soon left when Alice met up with them. I watched Bewaji and Alice exchange words before Bewa stormed off toward the port while Alice watched her go.
About a minute later, my phone rang, and I picked up immediately when I saw the caller ID was Alice.
“I found her,” she stated the moment I answered. “Sorry for disturbing you.”
“So, where was she?”
“Nowhere really. She was just walking around.” I paused, still reeling from what I had witnessed. “So, talk to you later.”
“Is there anything I should know, Alice?” I asked.
“Like what?” she questioned.
“Anything. Any new development?”
“Nothing,” she lied.
I closed my eyes and groaned in disappointment. I never expected Alice to cover for her.
“I just saw the two of you with Marcus. Why are you lying?” I confronted her.
“How… how did you know?” she stuttered as she looked around before her eyes finally rested on my car, and she moved toward it.
“Stay where you are, Alice,” I ordered, and she stopped.
“Kylian, I promise you, it is not what you think. I assure you there is nothing between her and Marcus.”
“I don’t care what happens between her and Marcus. Just remind her of her contract and not to drag my reputation through the mud.”
“Kylian, please—”
“I don’t want her to know that I know.”
“What?” she said in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t want her to know I know about her association with Marcus. Is that taken?”
“Alright,” she affirmed, and I cut the call.
“The same goes for you, Antoine,” I said to my driver, who looked back at me. “I don’t want Frances knowing about this.”
“Of course, sir,” he assured me.
“Let’s go home,” I stated as I dialed another number.
“Frances, do you mind telling me why Lola told me Bewa has no fertility issues, and then she told Bewa something different entirely?”
There was silence.
“Frances, I believe I asked you a question.”
“Come home and let’s talk,” she replied in a low voice.
“What have you done, Frances?” I bellowed, deeply scared of whatever my girlfriend had been up to again.
“You what?” I yelped in utter surprise.
“Kylian, calm down.” she tried to control the situation like she always does
“Don’t tell me how to feel, Frances. How could you?” I blurted as anger surged through me like wildfire. “And then you had the audacity to lie to me.”
“Because I know you won’t agree.”
“Of course I won’t agree, because this is barbaric,” I lamented with a mixture of frustration and resentment. “This is barbaric and inhumane, even for you, Frances. You harvested her eggs.”
“Kylian—”
“Do not say a word,” I warned her with a clenched jaw. “Because everything that comes out of your mouth just pisses me off more. You harvested her eggs without her permission.”
“She gave us consent.”
“No, she didn’t give you consent to invade her body for your selfish reasons, because that was the reason you did it. And then you told her she had fertility issues when there is none.”
“She was told there was a cure.”
“And that suddenly makes it better? Why are you talking like an idiot?” I retorted with a glare.
Frances’s eyebrows drew together as she frowned at me. “Are you insulting me because of Bewaji?”
“Are you serious, Frances? You don’t see anything wrong with what you’ve done?”
“What is so wrong about trying to control....”
“There is that word again. Control. Control, control, control. When did you become so obsessed with control?” I shouted intensely.
“I became obsessed when you started sleeping with her,” she yelled with trembling lips. She let out a sigh and moved closer to me, wrapping her arms around me with the smile that once warmed my heart but now only sickened me.
“Okay, see it like this… right now, we have fourteen viable embryos at the fertility clinic, and in a month, we will have the permit we need. So we won’t need her anymore. Everything I do, I do for you, for us.”
Is this who I am living with? How did I not see this? How did I not know she was this kind of person? I removed her hands from my body.
“Maybe this side of you was cute and attractive before, but not anymore,” I stated as I moved away from her
“I can’t even look at you.” I walked out of our bedroom.
