On the road from Lagos 3: The Guilt

EXT. CAR PARK-DAWN
A TOYOTA CAMRY, 2017 slowly drives into the car park. Even at this time of the day, the park is swollen with people who are going about their business

INT. INSIDE A CAR-DAWN
MADAM JOHNSON and REMILEKUN JOHNSON sits inside the car and they both look gloomily. Madam Johnson is a fair, tall, chubbily black woman in her mid 6os while Remilekun is a dark, tall, slim black lady in her 20s. Remilekun unbuckles her seat belt and reaches for the door

REMILEKUN
Thank you grandma for the ride

MADAM JOHNSON
Remi wait

REMILEKUN
What is it?

MADAM JOHNSON
Won’t you change your mind about this?

REMILEKUN
Grandma, we have been over this like a billion times already. This is what I want and I need you to accept my decision

MADAM JOHNSON
What you have always wanted is to go to University of Ibadan, you have been singing it in a song since you were 10, you can’t just hop and leave because your father won’t do what you want

REMILEKUN
I don’t care what that man does anymore, he has set his own path. This is me setting my own path

MADAM JOHNSON
You don’t have to go Zaria to do this, you can do that here in Lagos with me. You can go to UI and stay with me doing the holidays, Remi you don’t have to go to Zaria to do this

REMILEKUN
I am trying to get my life back together Grandma, I don’t think staying in close proximity to my dad or anyone close to my dad will help me in doing that

MADAM JOHNSON
You can’t punish your father like this

REMILEKUN
Punishment? This is no punishment grandma (she gets emotionally) if we are talking about punishment, nothing will make me happier than seeing him in jail but instead he is happy living his brand new life. After everything that man has done, he gets to be happy and I hate the fact that he is happy, it displeases me greatly….moreover I am sure he is happy that I am out of his life

MADAM JOHNSON
He is not happy Remilekun, I know and I understand why you feel this way but he is your father, you are going to have to forgive him one day

Remi becomes angry

REMILEKUN
Forgive him you say? The man killed my mother, easy for you to say forgiveness because she is not your daughter

MADAM JOHNSON
That is not what I mean Remilekun

REMILEKUN
Can we not talk about my dad, I don’t plan on coming to this side of the country again which mean this might be the last time you will see me

MADAM JOHNSON
God forbid I wi….

REMILEKUN
What I am trying to say is that, I don’t want our last conversation to be an argument about my dad

She reaches out for Madam Johnson’s hand and hold it

 REMILEKUN
I love you grandma

MADAM JOHNSON
I love you too

REMILEKUN
I promise to be at your funeral

MADAM JOHNSON
(In shock) Remilekun!
