Deliver a verdict
EXT. SUPREME COURT, ABUJA-
AFTERNOON
BANKOLE
BABADE, a well groomed man, handsome young man with a caramel complexion stands
tall in lawyer gown looking into the air. He appears to be in his early
thirties and he is totally unaware of the happenings in his environment
JOSEPHINE
‘JO’ BABADE, a slim, fair, young woman also in her lawyer gown walks up to him.
She appears to be in her late thirties too
JO
Banks!
She gets no
response from him, then she taps him gently on the shoulder and that jolts him
back to reality
BANKOLE
Jo!
JOSEPHINE
It is time
Bankole
sighs heavily with worries, seeing his fear, she holds his hands
JO
It is gonna
be okay
BANKOLE
What if the court rules against us the way
appeal court did?
JO
Then we do
regular trial
BANKOLE
My sister
will go to jail with regular trial
JO
I am sure
she knows that you have tried your best
He sighs heavily again
BANKOLE
Let go
INT- A COURTROOM-AFTERNOON
Everybody
in the courtroom all rise when the judges enters. Everybody sits down except
for the lawyers. The Chief Justice who is at the centre of them pushes forward
on his seat and looks directly at Bankole
CHIEF
JUSTICE
Bankole,
that is your name right?
BANKOLE
Yes sir,
Bankole Babade
CHIEF
JUSTICE
I must say
you have some guts coming into my court room
Bankole sighs deeply as his wife,
Josephine holds for his hands for moral support
CHIEF
JUSTICE
I mean two
high ranking court already ruled against you and yet, here you are arguing the
impossible. How old are you that you disturbing me like this?
Bankole bows his head in
disappointment
CHIEF
JUSTICE
Jury Trial
is not a system used in Nigeria, I am sure other judges told you that, I don’t
know why you think I will rule differently…..
Looking very unhappy, Bankole
removes his hands from Jo and looks the Chief Justice in the eyes
BANKOLE
But it is
in the con…
CHIEF
JUSTICE
I am not
here to argue with you but to deliver my verdict….
At this point, there was a deafening
silence
CHIEF
JUSTICE
I like the
fact that you didn’t give up, young man
Bankole raises his head up with
hope
CHIEF
JUSTICE
Like I
said, Jury Trial is not used in Nigeria but it is in the constitution. I will
like to see how it goes
Jo looks at her husband smiling
CHIEF
JUSTICE
You are
permitted to go ahead
Jo hugs her
husband with happiness as the court clerk calls All Rise
EXT.
OUTSIDE THE COURT ROOM-AFTERNOON
As Bankole
and Jo walks out of the courtroom to see a crowd of reporters waiting for them
JO
I think it
is best we go through the back
BANKOLE
Yeah
They
doubled back and proceed to pass through another way but falls into the hands
of another set of reporters
1st
REPORTER
Mr. Babade,
after several attempts of getting your sister justice through the jury trial,
how do you feel about today’s victory?
2nd
REPORTER
Do you
think your sister will be acquitted through the jury trial?
Jo and
Bankole tries to wiggle their way out as questions keeps springing from
different reporters
3rd
REPORTER
Do you
think that the citizens of Nigeria will set your sister free after what she did
to her husband?
At this particular question,
Bankole turns to the reporters
BANKOLE
Imade King
remains a suspect until the court rules otherwise
1st
REPORTER
Let be realistic, with the evidences levied
against your sister, she is going down
Bankole wants to respond but he is
hold back by his wife, Jo
JO
Don’t….let
go
Bankole ignores her anyway and
talks to the reporters
BANKOLE
How about
we leave the downfall of Imade King to the court
And he leaves with Jo

BANKOLE
Do you want
the truth?

BANKOLE
The chances
of me getting you acquitted is as low as 10 percent

that before but with the jury w….
BANKOLE
With the jury trial, we have 10 percent. With Nigeria’s regular way of justice, you are going to jail
