EPISODE 2
INT. A PRISON- AFTERNOON
BANKOLE, JO
and another older woman sits in the visiting room waiting patiently
MADAM
BABADE, a tall, caramel skin colour woman in her sixties looks at the door
continuously tapping her feet nervously.
The door
opens and IMADE KING comes in. Imade, a young, woman of average height in her forties smiles
when she sees Bankole.
IMADE
Bankole,
I heard about the case
BANKOLE
Sister
He hugs his sister tight,
then removes himself from her hug
IMADE
You
did well
BANKOLE
Thank
you
Imade look at Jo
IMADE
Jo?
JO
Hello, Sister Imade
Imade goes to sit in front
of her mother
IMADE
Hello, Maami
Madam
Bankole looks Imade with a sad and disappointing look. Imade sees this look and
she sighs deeply
IMADE
Maam…
MAMA
BANKOLE
Why?
Why did you do this to yourself?
Bankole
senses the direction his mom is going to and he rushes to save his sister from
scolding
BANKOLE
Maami,
don…..
IMADE
Bankole!
She shakes her head to him
and he stands still. At this point, tears starts to gather in Madam Babade’s
eyes
MAMA
Ori
mi ti fe daru (I am about to go crazy)
because I have been racking my brain, looking for reasons why you will want to
do this to yourself. You had everything Imade, gbogbo nnkan to obinrin le fe (Everything a woman could want) you had
it all. You had a good man, a man who loved you so much and will gladly lay
down his life for you. You had beautiful kids and you were the CEO of your
company, a successful career. So fun mi kilode (So tell me why) why Imade, why will you do this to yourself? Why
will you decide to ruin your good reputation like this? Why?
At this
point, tears tear their way down Imade’s eyes as she watch her mother sob
bitterly. Bankole signals to Jo and Jo walks to Madam Babade
JO
Let
go, Maami
She pulls
Madam Babade up and they both walk out of the visiting room. Bankole sits in
front of his sister
BANKOLE
I
am so sorry sister, I didn’t know she was going to do that
Imade rubs tears away from her eyes
IMADE
It
is fine, it is not like I didn’t deserve that. Her disappointment in me is
understandable….
BANKOLE
This
might be the biggest case of my life and the biggest trouble you can ever be,
neither of us can’t spiral down the dark road
She nods slowly as cleans her tears away from her face
IMADE
Talk
to me, how are we doing?
BANKOLE
Do
you want the truth?
IMADE
Been
truthful and straightforward is what makes you, Bankole Babade
BANKOLE
The
chances of me getting you acquitted is as low as 10 percent
IMADE
You
told me that before but with the jury w….
BANKOLE
With
the jury trial, we have 10 percent. With Nigeria’s regular way of justice, you
are going to jail. That was what I told you first
Imade nods gently in
acceptance
BANKOLE
I
am sorry if I am been harsh but you asked for the truth
Imade nods again
IMADE
So
what is the plan?
BANKOLE
The
plan is get the jury to see the real you, the woman I grew up with and not the
one circumstance made you out to be
Imade nods in acceptance
again
IMADE
How
is he?
Bankole rolls his eyes
BANKOLE
You
have been asking me this question every time you see me and I will keep giving
you the same answer. You should forget him and focus on your case
IMADE
Do
you think he will come to the court?
Bankole become frustrated
BANKOLE
Sister
y….
IMADE
Indulge
me, Bankole
BANKOLE
He
let you rot in this jail for two year, so no, he is not coming
IMADE
He
didn’t pu…
BANKOLE
You
won’t have had to stay in here for two years if he had intervene and done
something but he didn’t, sister
Imade nods again
BANKOLE
The
next time you will be seeing me is in the court room
IMADE
Why?
BANKOLE
I
have to prepare but Jo will be here to prep you for the case (holds his
sister’s hands) I want you to know that I am doing everything in power to get
you back home to your kids
Imade smiles softly
IMADE
I
know
BANKOLE
One
more thing, Jo might not remember to tell you this but…. People will be brutal
to you
IMADE
I
know that
BANKOLE
No,
you don’t. After what you did to your husband, they want to crucify you. So I
need you not to let that get to you
Imade nods
BANKOLE
You
need to remain as calm as possible because they will be watching and one little
slip from you can destroy this case
IMADE
I
understand
He pulls Imade up with his
hands and hugs her
BANKOLE
I
promise you, we will beat this
Imade nods as she hugs him
back
Next on Why?
JO
We
all love her but she needs to be scolded, she made a terrible mistake
BANKOLE
Yes,
a mistake, she made a mistake and that mistake is about to cost her freedom. So
cut her some slack and stop bitching about her
JO
Ever since you took your sister’s case, you have become someone different. I mean have you stopped to think that maybe she did it
