CHAPTER EIGHTY FOUR
The Truth
I stepped out of the elevator into the VIP wing of the hospital on another mission to see Bewaji, even though I knew Alice would probably stop me again.
Nothing I say or do changes Alice's stance about me. Since my last meeting with Bewa, Alice watches over my wife like a mother hawk, and the few times I actually catch a glimpse of her, I see her fading more and more. It breaks my heart that Alice is letting her slip away without getting her the help she needs.
A few rooms away from Bewa's room, I caught sight of Delphine, my lawyer, right in front of Bewa's room and instantly turned away to hide, but unsuccessfully.
"I saw you, Kylian," she said out loud, and I closed my eyes and let out a heavy sigh, internally cursing myself for getting caught.
"I was told you would be here," she said as she walked up to me.
"Okay," I shrugged, as I already knew why she was here, and the last thing I wanted was to have the conversation I had been dreading right here, close to Alice and Bewa.
"Real Madrid called," she informed me, confirming my suspicion.
I shook my head. "I need more time." I can't leave Bewaji, not like this. Not without apologizing to her and helping her. Not without knowing if I still have a future with her.
"Kylian, you are biting off more than you can chew. Real Madrid has been more than considerate to you, even without knowing what is really going on with you. You played less than thirty percent of last season's matches, and pre-season is starting next week. If I go to them asking for more time, I might as well tell them to cancel their contract with you."
"But I can't leave yet," I yelled in frustration. "Bewaji needs help."
"She's getting the help she needs. She's literally in the hospital."
"Not that kind of help," I bellowed. "She looks okay, but she is not really okay, not by a long shot. She is the shell of herself."
Delphine's eyebrows drew together as she realized what I was saying. "Oh! That kind of help." She looked toward Bewa's room. "With all those losses, it kinds of make sense"
"And it is killing me that Alice is not getting her the help she needs."
"I won't be so sure about that. Bewa suffered some major injuries. Alice might just want her to be 100% physically before she tackles the mental aspect."
"I don't know about that. I just want my wife back, and Alice is an obstacle. I want her out of the way."
My lawyer looked at me in confusion.
"What are you saying?"
"I want Alice removed as her next of kin. I am her husband. I should have the power of attorney over her health. Can you help me with that?"
"Kylian..."
"If you can help me with that, I will go back to Madrid, and she would come with me. I will get her the help she needs. This is a win-win situation, Delphine."
"I am not disputing that, and I can help, but seeing the way Alice is fighting you, she won't let it go easily."
"Alice is my employee. I pay her, and I still fucking do. Since when did she become someone I need to be scared of?"
"Since she knows where all the bodies are buried. She could blow up everything you have built and call attention to the very thing we are trying to keep safe."
"And what exactly are we keeping safe? Frances took the Rever Project."
Delphine frowned at my utterance.
"What?"
"How did you know that?" she asked in a hard voice.
"Know what?"
"That Frances was trying to take the Rever Project?"
"Trying? She didn't?"
"I didn't say anything because of everything that was going on, but you knew that she was making a move for Rever, and you didn't say anything," she blurted out, looking upset. I looked away and let out a sigh.
"She worked very hard on that project, and I figured I would let her have it, you know, as a reward for what she sacrificed for me."
Delphine scoffed.
"Are you kidding me, Kylian? She got rewarded for every sacrifice she made."
"The project was her idea in the first place."
"No, it was Bewa's idea, and you keep saying she worked hard on the project like she was the only one working on it. I worked on it, your parents did, Bewa's father handled all the groundwork and almost got killed for it, and you.... you actually lost your child. And Bewa, that poor girl, suffered the most. How on earth do you think that leech deserves anything after everything she has done to you and your family?" she uttered angrily.
"I just wanted her out of my life, and if taking Rever would guarantee that, then I was willing to let her have it. I can always rebuild."
"Well, I refuse to let her have a penny from you. You know, the moment you spent two weeks in that penthouse with Bewa, I knew you would leave Frances for her. Knowing how vengeful and greedy Frances can be, I knew she would come for Rever, so I started making plans to protect it while still going to let her keep her shares. I am not a monster, I know, she worked hard, but after what she did.... calling Bewa to your house and having her confront you, knowing how sick she was..."
"That was my fault," I interjected. "I should have told Bewa the truth."
"Maybe, but before you started anything meaningful with Bewaji, you broke things off with Frances, and if she had just let you go, none of this would have happened. She is the architect of everything that has happened."
"Still..." I trailed off when I saw Alice walk out of Bewa's room with a doctor. Delphine turned to see what distracted me.
"I heard she is getting discharged today," my lawyer said, and I nodded.
"My life is a mess, and I don't know what to do," I complained.
"Of course, you know what to do... go back to Spain."
"But Bewa..."
"After everything that has happened, myself and your parents finally got things under control. We got a handle on your business, the first phase for Rever has already started, and what we need you to do is just get back on the pitch."
"I know, but Bewa..."
"I will talk to Alice, and we will get Bewa the help she needs. When she is fine, if I have to threaten Alice to get you in the room with Bewa, I will. But for now, there is a jet waiting for you on the private tarmac, and you need to get yourself to Madrid tonight."
Just then, Bewa came out of the room with Alice.
"At least, let me say goodbye." I moved to go see her, but Delphine blocked my path. "I can't leave without saying goodbye."
"She does not want to see you, Kylian," she reminded me.
"Are you serious, Delphine?"
"Even apart from your issues with her, considering what you just said about her mental health, I don't think you can fix anything with her today... but you know what you can fix? Your career!"
I looked over her head at Bewa, who was just staring into the air lifelessly. Delphine was right. I couldn't fix anything with her like that.
"I will go," I decided and started walking back to the elevator. I pressed the button and waited.
"Your team will be waiting for you at that tarmac," Delphine said. The elevator opened, and I entered.
"Don't think about anything, just focus on your game. I will handle things for you," she told me as the elevator doors closed.
TO BE CONTINUED ON NEXT SATURDAY, 9.00PM WAT.
With this, we come to the end of Kylian's point of view. From next week, we will continue from Bewaji's point of view.
