On the road from Lagos 11: Father and Daughter

BACK TO PRESENT
INT. INSIDE MARCO POLO- DAWN
Oba-Abass rubs his eyes and sigh deeply. Cece comes in and sits in her seat. Seconds later, RHEMA, a tall dark young lady in her early 20s comes in with a school bag at her back. She comes in with smile on her face like she has no problem in the world. She walks to the back of the Marco Polo and sits next to Remilekun

RHEMA
(Stretches her hand to Remilekun) hello I am Rhema (Remilekun looks at her and snubs her) okay, not the talking type

Remilekun looks so gloomily as she caress her necklace

FLASHBACK- REMILEKUN-TWO YEARS AGO
INT.INSIDE a BUILDING IN LAGOS-AFTERNOON
Remilekun walks into towards a door and she smiles when she see an older woman in early 60s behind the table as the secretary

SECRETARY
(smiling brightly) Happy birthday Remilekun

REMILEKUN
Thank you Ma’am, is dad in?

SECRETARY
He is but he is with someone right now

REMILEKUN
I need to talk with him briefly, (she turns towards the door)

SECRETARY
(tries stop her from entering) don’t go in

Remilekun enters and sees her father, BODE JOHNSON kissing another woman, instantly the smile on Remilekun’s face turns to anger. The duo sees her and they separate immediately. Bode Johnson is a tall, fair young man in his Mid-forties and ANITA EKPE, the other woman is of average height, caramel in complexion and appears to be in her forties

SECRETARY
I am so sorry sir (holds Remilekun’s hand) let go

REMILEKUN
(Removes her hand with force) the person that is supposed to leave is not me but her

Anita picks her bag and walks towards to Remilekun

ANITA
Happy birthday Remi

REMILEKUN
She is talking to me (looks at her dad) she is talking to me Dad, who gave her the right to?

BODE JOHNSON
Don’t be rude Remilekun

ANITA
I have a gift for you

REMILEKUN
Why are you still talking? (in a loud voice) get out

Anita leaves and the secretary closes the door after herself

BODE JOHNSON
That was rude and you should have told me that you were coming

REMILEKUN
She was not supposed to be here Dad, you promised me that

BODE JOHNSON
How was I supposed to know that you will stop by?

REMILEKUN
She was not supposed to be seen with you in public that was the deal. What if mom had seen her here?

BODE JOHNSON
Your mom has never shown interest in my work, so she will never come here

REMILEKUN
Still it is an insult to her

BODE JOHNSON
Oluwaremilekun Johnson, that will never happen again, can we please not talk about your mom (Remi sits and relaxes) so birthday girl what do you want for your birthday. Mention anything and it is yours

REMILEKUN
 Anything?

BODE JOHNSON
Yes anything, clothes, car maybe not a car yet. I will get you that when you clock 20, your grandma will frown at me if I buy you a car now

REMILEKUN
I want to watch lion king with you and mom at the cinema

BODE JOHNSON
(surprise) lion king? With me and your mom?

REMILEKUN
Yes

BODE JOHNSON
Remilekun, what are you trying to do here?

REMILEKUN
Watch my favourite movie with my parent

BODE JOHNSON
Ask for something else

REMILEKUN
That is all I want

BODE JOHNSON
Well that is not going to happen, you know your mom and I have not exactly acted like the couple we are supposed to be for some years now

REMILEKUN
You two were never a couple but you tolerated each other for me, so for one last time, can you tolerate each other again? Actually I correct myself, second to the last time because you two are going to sit next to each other on my wedding day

Bode Johnson burst into laughter with a loud sound, through his laughter he sees the look of sadness and nostalgic on Remilekun’s face. His laughter reduces

BODE JOHNSON
I know that look, I know it all too well

He sits upright

BODE JOHNSON (CONT’D)
Your mom is every man’s dream, she is beautiful, caring, loving, hardworking, smart and a badass lawyer at that. But (he sighs deeply)

REMILEKUN
But you don’t love her, you never did. She was just a duty you had to fulfil to inherit your dad’s company. I know that

BODE JOHNSON
I am so sorry Remilekun and I promise you that you will never have to pass through what you mom and I passed through

REMILEKUN
I guess I will have to stop making birthday wishes of having parent who don’t just have loving me in common but also love each other

BODE JOHNSON
What time is the movie and which cinema?

REMILEKUN
Silverbird cinema and the movie is by 8.15pm

BODE JOHNSON
I will meet you and your mom there

REMILEKUN
Dad, how is it a family outing if you meet us at the cinema

BODE JOHNSON
Fine, I will be home by 7pm to pick you two up

REMILEKUN
And after the movie, we can check the new restaurant on Mainland

BODE JOHNSON
I thought it is just going to be movies alone

REMILEKUN
No, It will be nice to end my birthday in a fancy restaurant as a family

BODE JOHNSON
Anything for you sweetheart

REMILEKUN
Thank you

She stands up, then Bode Johnson stretches his hand
BODE JOHNSON
Aren’t you going to hug me birthday girl

REMILEKUN
No, I hate her smell on you

BODE JOHNSON
That can be fixed

He opens his drawer and brings out a bottle of perfume. He stands up and sprays it on his body. He stretches his hand out again

BODE JOHNSON
Now?

Remilekun smiles and goes into his arms. Bode Johnson hugs wraps his arms around her with a bright smile on his face

BODE JOHNSON
I love you sweetheart

REMILEKUN
