EPISODE 3
Love, What a criminal!
CONTINUOUS FROM LAST EPISODE
EXT. OUTSIDE PRISON GATE-AFTERNOON
Bankole
come out looking pissed as he march toward his mother and Jo
BANKOLE
Maami, what was that?
MADAM
I…I…
BANKOLE
I
brought you here on the promise that you won’t bring her down, what was that?
MADAM
Seeing
her like that, I didn’t even know when I started saying all those things
BANKOLE
People
are out here crucifying her for a crime she didn’t commit. Our job as the only
people she has is to support her, if you want to join the league of people that
want to nail her to a cross, you should join them but don’t bother showing your
face to her again
JO
Come
on. Bank….
BANKOLE
Shsssh,
I am talking to my mother, don’t interrupt
MADAM
Ma
binu, Bankole(I am sorry Bankole)
BANKOLE
Go
home, Maami
He walks to the one of the
cars in front of the prison
JO
I
am sorry ma, you know he is not like this. The case is getting to him
MADAM
I know, you should go
JO
Bye
ma
She walks to the same car
Bankole entered
INT. BANKOLE’S CAR-AFTERNOON
Bankole
drives his car over the flyover with Jo in next to him. Bankole keeps checking
his cell phone regularly and he will sighs heavily in frustration each time he looks at his phone.
This didn’t escape Jo’s notice
JO
You
shouldn’t have talked to your mother that way
He looks confused
BANKOLE
What?
JO
Your
mother? You were rude to her. It is not like she is wrong, your sister needed
to hear that
Bankole looks unhappy
BANKOLE
Say
that one more time and you are off the case
Jo becomes upset
JO
Why
are you acting like only you care about her?
BANKOLE
Well
forgive me if I am finding it difficult to see the love
JO
We
all love her but she needs to be scolded, she made a terrible mistake
BANKOLE
Yes,
a mistake, she made a mistake and that mistake is about to cost her freedom. So
cut her some slack and stop bitching about her
JO
Ever
since you took your sister’s case, you have become someone different. I mean
have you stopped to think that maybe she did it
BANKOLE
Jo,
I can see that you are trying your possible best to piss me off this evening
JO
What
are you going to do? Take me off the case? You have only few more weeks and I
am the only one you have got. So I don’t think you can take me off the case
BANKOLE
Say
more trashy things about my sister and see what I will do
Bankole
picks his cell phone up again, drops it in annoyance again. Jo looks more upset
JO
What
is wrong with you?
BANKOLE
Jo,
what exactly is your problem this evening?
JO
I
should be asking you that question, what is your problem? Am sorry but does
marriage vows mean nothing to people anymore
BANKOLE
What
are you talking about?
JO
I
can’t believe you have the audacity to be waiting for your first love’s call
when you are with me. I don’t just understand why you need that woman’s
approval so much
BANKOLE
I
don’t know what you are talking about
JO
She
abandoned you when you needed her the most and here you are waiting for her call
like a dog waiting for its mistress to tell him that he did a good job
Bankole
suddenly swerves to the side of the road and gently parks his car
JO
Why
are you stopping?
BANKOLE
I
don’t have time for this, so drive yourself or don't. I really don't care
JO
What?
He picks his phone and opens
the door
JO
What
are you doing Bankole?
He leaves the car. Jo comes
out after him
JO
Come
back here Bankole
He ignores
her and walks away. Walking by the road, he looks so worried and full of
thought
BANKOLE
(VOICEOVER)
Love,
what a criminal? A scientist will tell you that love is just a chemical flood of dopamine and oxytocin released into the brain. A dictionary will define love as an
intense feeling of affection and care towards another person while a lame man
will say love is just blind and that, I agree with. I have been asking myself
questions I can't bring myself to ask her…. Why? Why will she do this to herself?
Why?
FLASHBACK
EXT. A HOUSE SOMEWHERE IN
IBADAN- MORNING
A teenage
Bankole in school uniform sells bread and akara (Bean Cake) with his much younger mother in
front of their house. There were customers sitting under the shield on a bench
helping themselves to a breakfast of bread and akara
Bankole
looks up to see a young man and lady walking towards them. He smiles brightly
when he sees the young lady, he leaves what he is doing and runs to her
ANIKE WADA, popularly called ANN is a fair, slim, tall young lady in her early
twenties. The young man with her, WEMIMO AROTILE, is a dark, slim, tall man also in his early twenties
BANKOLE
Ann,
how are you? How was your night?
ANN
You
don’t stop, do you?
He replies with a confident
smile
BANKOLE
A
real man never stops aiming high
ANN
Well,
a real man never leaves his mother to sell akara alone
BANKOLE
Oh
that, I will see you later then
ANN
You
should give up, you are too small for me
BANKOLE
You
say that like it is suppose to send me packing
ANN
Well, is it working?
BANKOLE
No,
it is not
Wemimo bursts into laughter
and give Bankole a thumbs up
WEMIMO
My
guy
Bankole smiles as he goes
back to helping his mother
ANN
Why
on earth is Imade always late?
Wemimo goes to greet Madam
Babade
WEMIMO
E

Madam
Babade looks up from the akara she is frying and smiles to Wemimo
MADAM
BABADE
Ah,
ah, Wemimo, bawo ni? Se o ju dada (Ah,
ah, Wemimo, how are you? did you well up well)
WEMIMO
Bee

MADAM
BABADE

Madam Babade see Ann walking
towards her
MADAM
BABADE

Ann looks unimpressed
ANN
Maami,
it is Ann, Ann and not Anike. Ann
MADAM
BABADE
Anike
is a good name, you should learn to embrace it
ANN
There
we go again, Bankole, kindly go upstairs and call your forever late sister
Madam Babade talks to
Bankole
MADAM
BABADE
Iwo

doing?) I will call her for you
Madam
Babade looks up at the olden day’s two storey building almost at the verge of
collapse and she shout at the top of her voice
MADAM
BABADE
Imade,
Imadeeeeee
A voice from afar replies
VOICE
Maaaaaa
MADAM
BABADE
Your
friends are here, you should come down on time
Ann walks
to the left side of the house and looks up at the window
WEMIMO
What
are you doing?
ANN
Waiting
for her to show her face by that window with a smile on her face and say
(mimicking Imade) oh my God, you guys are around. I am so sorry, I had trouble
getting water to take my bath. Please kindly wait for me, I will be down in ten
WEMIMO
Oh
come on, she does not say it like that
IMADE
Oh
my God!
The duo
looks up at young IMADE in her early twenties. She looks at them with a bright
smile on her face
IMADE
You
guys are around. I am so sorry, I had trouble getting water to take my bath.
Please kindly wait for me, I will be down in ten
Ann looks at Wemimo with
I-told-you-so-look before looking up
ANN
Can’t
you disappoint me for once and be prepared by the time we get here, Imade. Why
are you always late?
IMADE
Come
on Ann, you know how scare water is in Ibadan
Ann becomes angry
ANN
Hellooooo, I live in Ibadan too, do you see me coming
late?
IMADE
Maybe
it is my area then
Ann raises her voice
ANN
I
can’t believe this, you give me the same excuse every day. What about your
brother? You live in the same area, hell you even live in the same house. Look at
him dressed up for school and ready to go. Why are you always the late one?
Wemimo quickly calms Ann
down
WEMIMO
You
should go Imade, we will wait for you
ANN
Says
who?
IMADE
Thank
you Wemimo, you are a darling
She leaves the window side
WEMIMO
Come
on Ann, why are you unusually grumpy this morning?
ANN
I
don’t understand why you are not, she does this every day. And frankly I don’t
understand why we are still friends with her
WEMIMO
Come
on Ann, why will you say that? We are all friends
ANN
Only
because of you. She is not even in our class, I see no reason why we should
keep seeing her
WEMIMO
We
both are not in the same department and we are friends
ANN
I
am talking about social class
Wemimo’s
smile disappears as he looks around to see if anyone heard Ann
WEMIMO
Keep
your voice down….. And why will you say that?
ANN
It
is not like I am lying, birds of same feather should flock together
WEMIMO
You
sound like my misguided family when you say that
Ann relaxes and looks sorry
ANN
I
am sorry, I di…..
Imade comes running out
IMADE
Tada,
I am done. Let go
The smile returns to his
face when he sees her
ANN
About
time
IMADE
Maami,
I am leaving oh
MADAM
BABADE
Okay
The trio walks away from the
house.
Next on Why?
ANN
Who
said anything about marriage, I am just having fun
IMADE
You
are dating a man with no plans of getting married to him
ANN
I don’t have time for your judgie attitude this morning
