“Rere, it is suicide……..
Inside a building’s elevator, RERE and ROTI stand inside silently as the elevator door opens to show about twenty people waiting with smiles on their faces
Everybody: welcome ma
Rere: (with a surprise look on her face she turns to Roti who smiles at her, then she steps out of the elevator) nice to meet you all (pauses then turns to Roti, signalling him to send them away)
Roti: (smiling, claps his hands together) since that you all met the boss, you should get back to work (they disperse)
Rere: (turns to Roti as the workers were dispersing) care to explain what that was all about?
Roti: they are the people that will help us make history
Rere: (sees a huge sign on the wall with the title (SHAPIRO AND BELLO)) when you said you spend the money I gave you well, you were not joking (he smiles as ESOSA walk towards them)
Esosa: (smiling) Ms Shapiro, nice to meet you (stretches her hand for a handshake)
Rere: nice to meet you too (shakes her hand) you even know my name
Esosa: yes, Roti told me a lot about you
Rere: what could he have to told you about me when I myself barely know him
Roti: I just told her who the boss is
Esosa: it is really nice to put a face to who Rere Shapiro is
Rere: well I hope I did not disappoint you
Esosa: no, not at all. You are exactly the way he described you to me
Rere: I would love to know how he describe me to you but I have work to do
Esosa: we can do that another time
Roti: we will see you later (Esosa nods and leaves) this way (he leads Rere into an exquisite office furnished with expensive Italian leather. Rere looks around) so what do you think?
Rere: this was not what I expected from you
Roti: what did you expect?
Rere: my expectation has no meaning. Are you sleeping with her?
Roti: (confuse) who?
Rere: the lady who approached us
Roti: Esosa?
Rere: I don’t know her name, but she was the lady who came to say hi last
Roti: no, of course not she is my assistant. Why will you think that?
Rere: your interaction is not that of a boss to a staff
Roti: we are just friends
Rere: you are sure?
Roti: Rere, what is this about?
Rere: I know your personal life is not my business but I can’t have staffs that are in this because of you. I want people that believe in the cause
Roti: I know better than to do that
Rere: alright (she sits down) give me the gist (Roti switches on the projector that is on the table and a man with grey hair that appears to be in his early sixties comes on the white board) why am I seeing Olumide Ameberu?
Roti: he is the man we are going to work with. I had meeting with him and he is looking forward to meeting you
Rere: (throw her hands up in confusion) why am I meeting him?
Roti: because he is going to be the next president
Rere: (looking upset) I thought I told you that we are making Nate Ehosa the president again
Roti: the president is a dead end
Rere: excuse me
Roti: the party is supporting Ameberu.
Rere: (chuckles) I still don’t get your logic
Roti: from what I gathered, Ehosa was supposed to go for one term
Rere: one term?
Roti: yes, that was the deal he made with the party before they supported him the first time and now they are supporting Ameberu for president
Rere: so are you saying that Ehosa has no intention of going for a second term
Roti: of course he does, that is why he is trying to get his son married to Bashorun’s daughter to curry favour from Bashorun
Rere: his intention is all that matters, we are going to work for Ehosa
Roti: excuse me, I thought I told you that the president is a dead end
Rere: I know but we are still going to work for him
Roti: (in a loud voice) Rere, it is suicide, the party has close their ears to him, the congress won’t even pass his bill. As far as politics is concerned in Nigeria, Nate Ehosa’s career is over
Rere: it is our job to make the impossible possible, we are working with Ehosa
Roti: well I am sorry, I can’t let you do that
Rere: excuse me?
Roti: I know this place would not be without your resources but I have been running this place for two years and the last thing I will let you do is walk into this place I destroy what I have built for two years
Rere: (scoff) you built?
Roti: yes I built this place, this place is yours as it is mine
Rere: when I pass the bill, will you work for Ehosa?
Roti: what?
Rere: if I am able to get the bill passed, will you work for Ehosa
Roti: there is no way you can move the congress
Rere: well I am going to try, so if I pass this bill, will you work for Ehosa?
Roti: even if you do, the party will not support Ehosa
Rere: it is a start and alliance change all the time, that is what politics is all about
Roti: alright, if you are able to pass this bill, we will work for Ehosa
Rere: good
Roti: but if you are unable to. You will work with me to support Ameberu
Rere: deal but first thing first, I need to meet the president. Is there a way of meeting him discreetly?
Roti: he goes to a suya spot in the city at least once a week when he is Abuja. I will get you to meet him
Rere: I need to think of a way to move the congress into passing the bill
Roti: what you need now is to freshen up and rest. So you need to go home
Rere: that is if I have a home to go to
Roti: I got an apartment for you
Rere: (smiling) really, let go
