Previously on Why?
WEMIMO
What is it, Imade?
IMADE
He is not breathing well
WEMIMO
Who is not breathing?
IMADE
Wemi, he is not breathing well, I don’t know what to do?
EPISODE 112
The heart or the lungs
INT. ONE HOSPITAL IN IBADAN-
EVENING
Bankole
sits next to Imade in a private room at the hospital as they watch Wemi sleep
on the bed breathing with the aid of oxygen mask. Wemimo comes in with Ann and
Tolani in a rush. Bankole and Imade sits up when they see them
IMADE
Hello,
Wemimo
Giving her no response, he
moves closer to Wemi on the bed
WEMIMO
How
is he?
IMADE
I
guess okay
TOLANI
What
did they say is wrong with him?
IMADE
We
don’t know yet, we are still waiting for them
Wemimo looks up from Wemi at
Imade upset
WEMIMO
Imade,
what happened? When I gave you this boy about a week, he was healthy and less
than a week, this happened to him
TOLANI
Wemimo,
I don’t think you should do that here
WEMIMO
He
was not breathing and you didn’t think to take him to the hospital. You had to
call me to tell you that
IMADE
Blame
me, of course you blame me. Every time someone is sick, I am the easiest person
to blame. (in a loud voice) forgive me if I am a shitty mother but there is no
exact instruction manual for parenthood. Maami who knows so much about it is not
always at home anymore, Bankole treat me like I don’t exist and you… you left-
and I understand why you did. I am not making excuse for been a terrible mother
but he had a fever, I thought it was a side effect for walking like he had with
teething. It was when he started having difficulty with breathing that I know
it was more serious
At this point, she starts to
sobs
SISTER
TOLANI
Oh,
come on Imade
Tolani walks to her and hugs
her tight
IMADE
What
if he dies because of me?
TOLANI
Wemi
will be fine
VOICE
Do
I need to call the security to throw you out?
They all
look back at the door where an elderly woman in say her fifties stands looking
not too happy
ANN
And
you are?
DOCTOR
That
boy’s doctor who is not pleased with the idiotic adults who feels the best place
to have an argument is right next to him
The group relaxes as Imade
cleans her tears away
IMADE
We
are sorry, ma’am
A nurse comes in and the
doctor turns to the nurse
DOCTOR
I
thought you are only to allow the parent of this child into this room
The nurse points to Imade
NURSE
She
is the mother
Doctor turns to Imade
DOCTOR
You
are the mother?
IMADE
Yes, I am and he is his father
DOCTOR
Of
course, this can only happen when teenagers who can’t take care of themselves
decided to bring a child into the world
ANN
You
can’t talk to them like that
DOCTOR
Excuse
me?
ANN
They
are his guardian, you can’t talk to them like that
DOCTOR
They
put his health in jeopardy
WEMIMO
Ann,
enough
Ann ignores him
ANN
Yes, I understand that they were wrong but you still can’t talk to them like they
are children
DOCTOR
They
were acting like one and I am older than all of…
ANN
I
don’t give a fuck about your age right now because right here, you are just a
doctor and you work for them. So how about you give them the respect you will
give any other patient’s guardian
WEMIMO
Ann,
it is okay, I was wrong. (Faces the doctor) we are sorry, ma’am but can you tell
us what is wrong with him
DOCTOR
We
don’t know yet
ANN
You
don’t know yet. Aren’t you a doctor? You are suppose to know
DOCTOR
I
think it will be best if I talk to you two alone
TOLANI
Ann,
Bankole, let go
ANN
Oh! no
TOLANI
You
have no business here
Tolani drags her out
BANKOLE
We
will just be outside
Bankole leaves too
DOCTOR
Like
I was saying before, we don’t know what is wrong with him because we are not
equipped to diagnose him properly
WEMIMO
So
we take him to another hospital
DOCTOR
Yes,
we will transfer him to the teaching hospital where a specialist in
cardiothoracic will see him
Wemimo’s eyebrow widens
WEMIMO
Cardiothoracic?
Is something wrong with his heart?
Imade looks at Wemimo with
fear
IMADE
His
heart?
DOCTOR
Or
his lungs, it can either of them or both, we don’t know for sure
Imade covers her mouth with
her hands
IMADE
Oh
my God!
DOCTOR
Don’t
give up hope, it might be a small issue
WEMIMO
There
is never a small issue with the heart
IMADE
Or
the lungs
DOCTOR
You
have to stay positive for your son… and I am sorry for the way I spoke to you,
your friend was right, I never should have spoken to you like that
WEMIMO
It
was wrong of us, so it is fine
DOCTOR
He
will be leaving within 10 minutes
WEMIMO
Alright
IMADE
But
is it safe for him to leave, I mean he is on oxygen
DOCTOR
He
will fine as long as he is on oxygen
WEMIMO
Thank
you, ma’am
The doctor leaves as Imade
turns to sleeping Wemi
IMADE
How
could I let get this bad? I am really a bad mother
Wemimo pulls her to himself
WEMIMO
Hey,
you are a good mother. This was not your fault, I am sorry I made you think it
was
Tolani, Ann
and Bankole comes in. Ann sighs deeply when she sees Imade crying in Wemimo’s
arms
ANN
I
thought she said she does not know what is wrong with him
WEMIMO
She
does not know
ANN
Then
why is Imade crying?
WEMIMO
They
think something is wrong with his heart
BANKOLE
What?
IMADE
Or
his lungs
WEMIMO
So
they are going to transfer him to the teaching hospital
Ann opens her mouth
ANN
It is bad?
WEMIMO
She
think it might be a small issue
ANN
It
is never a small issue where the heart or lungs is concerned
TOLANI
Hey,
positivity, why are you making it sound like he is going to die?
Ann looks Tolani with tears
running down her eyes
TOLANI
Ann,
you are crying
Ann goes to the bed and she
holds his small hand
ANN
He
is too small for this
TOLANI
I
am so sorry this is happening to you two
Wemimo gently caress Imade’s
back
TOLANI
What
can I do for you?
WEMIMO
I
need you to go back to work
TOLANI
What?
How can I go back to work when Wemi is like this?
WEMIMO
Staying
here won’t make him okay, will it?
TOLANI
But
still…
WEMIMO
You
asked what you can do for me, that is all you can do for me. I can’t worry
about Wemi and worry about KINGS. I want to be here with Wemi 100%
TOLANI
Alright,
what should I do?
WEMIMO
Everything
we talked about, go ahead with it. If you have issues with it, get back to me
but I will like you not to have any issue
TOLANI
I
will take care of it, don’t worry
WEMIMO
Until
Wemi is fine again, tell Aunty Bebii, she is in charge
TOLANI
Alright
WEMIMO
Tell
Bintu, I need her to go with Aperry to see a client of mine, I will send her
the address
TOLANI
Okay,
what else do you need me to do?
WEMIMO
Take
Bankole home
BANKOLE
I
will to stay here with Wemi too
WEMIMO
And
you will but right now, I need to bring Imade’s clothes and books. I have a
feeling she will be going to the exam hall from the hospital
IMADE
I
can’t possibly leave Wemi alone for an exam
WEMIMO
He
won’t be alone, I will be here with him… Bankole, bring Wemi’s diaper bag and
make sure, it has everything he will need
BANKOLE
Okay
WEMIMO
Don’t
forget his favourite toy and meet us at the teaching hospital… also Maami, she
will want to know
Bankole nods
TOLANI
Bankole,
let go
The duo leaves
IMADE
How
can you think about my exam and work when he like that?
WEMIMO
I
have to… for all of us
Ann stands up as the
auxiliary nurses comes in
Next on Why?
BINTU
No,
am not…. On the day we were suppose to go to Abuja for the fashion show, they
decided to get a divorce on the staircase to their apartment and I was here
ANN
Seriously?
BINTU
Yes
ANN
If
you were there when they made the decision that means you must know the reason
BINTU
Sort
of
ANN
Then tell me
