Previously on Why?
ANN
I know you think that I want this divorce, yeah maybe I do, but please consider Bankole, he is going to be badly affected by this divorce if you go through with it
WEMIMO
Bankole will be fine, I will make sure of it. Now can I have it?
EPISODE 116
Like a filial son
EXT. TEACHING HOSPITAL-
EVENING
Bankole
sits under a tree on a bench looking into the air unaware of his surroundings
as people go up and down going about their business. Wemimo walks up to him
WEMIMO
Bankole!
Bankole turns to his
direction
WEMIMO
What
are you doing out, I have been looking for you?
BANKOLE
Just
needed some fresh air, is there a problem?
WEMIMO
No,
there is none. Maami brought dinner, come and eat before you go home
BANKOLE
Go
on, I will join you
Wemimo notices his sad state
WEMIMO
Are
you okay, Bankole?
Bankole
sigh deeply giving him no verbal response, then Wemimo moves closer to him
WEMIMO
Okay…
what is the problem?
He sits next to him on the
bench
BANKOLE
Do
you need this divorce?
Wemimo looks away
BANKOLE
I
mean, Micheal is married, she is not going back to him anymore
WEMIMO
Is
that the reason why you are sad?
BANKOLE
I
don’t want you two to get divorced, I love our family the way it is
WEMIMO
I
know and I love it too that way but as much as I do love it, your sister is not
happy with me, she does not love me
BANKOLE
Give
her time, she will be
WEMIMO
Our
marriage will be 2 years in a few months, if love is something we are suppose
to have in our marriage, it would have happened already
BANKOLE
You
are a patient man and a patient dog eats the fattest bone
WEMIMO
I
know where you are coming from, Bankole but I want to be loved too, I want
someone to love me the way I love your sister and I don’t see that in our
marriage
BANKOLE
You
don’t know that
WEMIMO
Your
sister said it and I agree with her
Bankole
puts his head in his hands in frustration. Wemimo pats his shoulder to comfort
him
WEMIMO
I
know this is not what you want but in a few years, you will understand why I am
doing this. Don’t worry, everything will be fine
Bnakole snaps
as he remove Wemimo’s hand from his shoulder harshly
BANKOLE
Nothing
is going to be fine anymore, nothing will be the same again, and it is like I
am back to square one
Wemimo looks sad himself
seeing Bankole’s sadness
WEMIMO
I
am sorry you feel this way but you know I am always going to be here for you
right and with Wemi been sick, I will always be in your corner. I am going
nowhere and please let stop talking about my marriage, it is making me sad too
Bnakole sigh deeply
WEMIMO
I
need you to do something for me
BANKOLE
What?
WEMIMO
I
have been racking my brain on what I can get you but it is difficult, so how
about you help me out. What do you want as a reward?
BANKOLE
Reward
for what?
WEMIMO
For
getting an admission of course
BANKOLE
I
don’t need a reward
WEMIMO
Oh
no, you need it. I know how hard you worked to get it… Things have been
stressful recently with Wemi and the divorce. They kind of suck the joy out of
it but it is a big deal and I want you to know that I am very proud of you
A soft smile breaks out of
Bankole’s face
BANKOLE
Thank
you
WEMIMO
So
what do you want? And please don’t ask me something I can’t get with money. Ask
for a new phone, a new sneaker, ask for anything, as long as I can get it with
money
BANKOLE
Can
I ask for both new sneakers and new phone?
WEMIMO
Done
Bankole chuckles out loudly
BANKOLE
No,
I am not saying I want them, I am just asking
WEMIMO
Okay,
so what do you want?
BANKOLE
How
about you let me get back to you on that
WEMIMO
No
problem, I will always be here and I am going nowhere. Come on, your food will
be cold already
Wemimo pulls Bankole up and
they both walk into the hospital
BACK TO PRESENT
INT. BANKOLE’S HOUSE- NIGHT
Bankole and
his wife Jo sits in his office going over some documents when Jo suddenly looks
up
JO
Babe,
I want to ask you something
Bankole replies without
looking up from his work
BANKOLE
What
is it?
JO
Why
were you so against them getting a divorce?
Bankole looks up immediately
BANKOLE
What?
JO
Your
sister and her husband… ex-husband. Everyone is saying you were against it and
that is why you made sure they never got divorced the first time, why?
BANKOLE
What
I did does not matter, he was never going to divorce her. All his talk about
wanting to be loved by his woman was just talk, he was too in love with her to
let her go
There was silence between
them as Jo looks at him intensely
BANKOLE
What?
JO
You
didn’t answer my question
BANKOLE
My
answer was not good enough for you
JO
You
didn’t answer it at all, you completely avoided my question…. Now I understand
BANKOLE
(Becoming
annoyed) understand what?
JO
You
are still the same 17 year old boy, who didn’t want them divorced
BANKOLE
Excuse
me
JO
Your
father died when you were little, so you never had a father, at least you
didn’t know what it feels like to have one and then Wemimo came in and took on
the responsibilities of a father and then you saw him as one. All of a sudden,
they were getting a divorce and then you were going to lose your father. Of
course, like any child, that didn’t sit well with you and then you made sure
they didn’t get one. And now they got divorced just when you were not around to
stop it again, you are angry
BANKOLE
You
have deeply misunderstood the situation, Jo
JO
Have
I? Because if I am reading the situation right, you have known about Wemimo’s
so called criminal life for a long time and you had no problem instead you
respected the man. I have seen how you carry him with upmost regard, I know how
much he means to you, I have seen how you look at him, like a filial son will
look at his father. You are not mad at him or his criminal life, you are angry
that he left your sister, you are mad that he is no longer family anymore. You
just covered up the real reason you are angry with him with his criminal life
Bankole just stares at Jo
BANKOLE
You
are just saying nonsense
He stands up to leave
JO
But
I am right, aren’t I?
BANKOLE
Like
I said, you are talking rubbish
He leaves the office banging
the door behind him
JO
I
am so right
Jo continues her work
Next on Why?
WEMIMO
Yes,
you are harassing her. Don’t you understand, a lot is going now right now? In
between her exams and Wemi, she is barely holding on and then you do this?
ANN
I
am doing this for you, don’t you see that?
WEMIMO
All
I know is that my family is going through a lot right now and when all of this
is over, I am sure Imade will sign the damn papers. So how about you back the
fuck off
ANN
Do
you even want this divorce?
