On the road from Lagos 25: The necklace

INT. UNKNOWN PRISON-UNKNOWN PERIOD

Remilekun eye Cece as she tries to adjust her leg in pain, Femi looks at her with worry before his gaze settles on her necklace

FEMI

You know the more I see that necklace, the more I am convinced that it is mine

REMILEKUN

And I said it is not, yours must be another one

FEMI

No, there is only one copy of it, I made sure of it

REMILEKUN

Well my mom gave me this

FEMI

And I gave mine to a woman who wants to give it to her daughter as a birthday gift

Oba-Abass faces Remilekun

OBA-ABASS

Is this true? Is it a birthday gift from your mom?

Remilekun caress the necklace

REMILEKUN

Yes it is but it proves nothing

CECE

How does this woman in question looks like?

FEMI

Tall, dark and pretty. She has a beautiful smile and I think she is a lawyer

OBA-ABASS

Yeah, that sound like the Selma I know

REMILEKUN

Even if it was yours, it is mine now

FEMI

Am not saying it is not

REMILEKUN

Then why are you so bent on proving that you gave it to my mom

FEMI

Because I am curious about your mom and I was wondering if I could see her again

CECE

Did you not listening to anything we said in the bus?

FEMI

No, I had a lot in my mind

CECE

Is everybody on that fucking bus to meditate?

Femi looks confused

FEMI

What is it?

OBA-ABASS

Selma Johnson died two years

FEMI

What?

Femi looks at Remilekun with sadness

FEMI

I didn’t know, I am so sorry for your loss

REMILEKUN

I thought you said you knew her

FEMI

Not really… it just that I met Selma only twice and that was a period where I wanted to blow my head off

CECE

Because your wife cheated on you?

Femi looks at Cece with disgust

FEMI

You know you should listen to her, you need to stop assuming things

REMILEKUN

Why do you want to meet her now?

FEMI

I don’t know how she did it, I don’t know how she said it but what I do know is that, whatever she said to me that day, stop me from putting a gun to my head and encouraged me to find a way to fix my problem

Femi stands up and rubs his eyes in frustration

FEMI

I don’t know who I am anymore while finding a solution to my problem, I lost myself. I neglected my career, my marriage is a mess and my family is in a shamble (tears starts to form in his eyes) I can’t even recognized the man I have become, I was once a loving father and husband, I want to become that again and the moment I saw that necklace, I saw hope. I felt she might say what she said to me again and my life will be back to the way it was before

Cece burst into laughter

CECE

I can’t believe this, a grown ass man crying to see Selma Johnson

FEMI

You don’t understand and I don’t expect you to understand what it is like to lose yourself

CECE

Has it ever occurred to you that the advice she gave you was wrong

FEMI

Or maybe I just took the advice the wrong way

OBA-ABASS

Selma Johnson gives really good advice, he must have taken it the wrong way

Jamin speaks absentmindedly

JAMIN

Yeah she gives really good advice

The party look at Jamin with surprise

CECE

You knew her?

JAMIN

Did I say that out loud?

OBA-ABASS

Yeah you did, how did you know her?

Remilekun scoffs

REMILEKUN

It seems the whole world knows my mom

JAMIN

She helped me with my sist….

Remilekun cuts in angrily

REMILEKUN

Enough, have heard enough about my mom for today

She crawls away for the party, Cece tries to stop her

CECE

You need to stay still Remilekun or you will hurt yourself more

Remilekun slaps her hands away

REMILEKUN

Leave me alone, you are not my mother, stop acting like you are

Cece moves towards her but Oba-Abass stops her

OBA-ABASS

Leave her be

Remilekun crawls to the extreme corner of the prison when the door suddenly opens
