EPISODE 120

Don’t fall for it

INT. TEACHING HOSPITAL, IBADAN- AFTERNOON

Ann enters Wemi’s room as tension envelope the room. She sees Maami flip through the divorce paper in her hand and look up at the couple. Imade looks like the ground should open up and swallow her whole while Wemimo, rubbing his forehead with his eyes closed sighed deeply in frustration

Ann closes her eyes in frustration and groans

ANN

Bankole, what have you done?

MAAMI

E ja iwe fun ara yin? (You two are getting divorced?) Why?

There was silence

MAAMI

(Agitated) Imade, o le soro ni? (Imade, can’t you talk?)

Imade gently shifts from her position away from Maami

WEMIMO

We are not compatible, Maami

ANN

That is a lie, Maami

Wemimo snaps at Ann

WEMIMO

Ann, how about you shut up?

ANN

Iro na pa, Maami, Imade yale ni (They are lying, Maami, Imade cheated)

MAAMI

(Screams at loud) Eh!

Maami faces Imade gobsmacked

MAAMI

Imade, kini mo gbo yi? (Imade, what am I hearing?)

Imade hastily distant herself from her mother this time around as tears starts to well up in her eyes.

MAAMI

Se lotan ni? (Is it true?) (she turns to Wemimo when Imade gives her no answer) Se lotan ni? (is it true)

WEMIMO

Maami, nnkan to sele ni wip… (Mother, what happened is that)

Maami closes the gap between her and Imade within a twinkle of an eye and gives her a hot, hard slap across the face. Wemimo rushes between them trying to save Imade from her mother’s wrath. Maami keeps trying to get to Imade even though Wemimo is holding her back

MAAMI

(Shouting at the top of her voice) Imade, o yale (Imade, you cheated)

At this point, Wemi starts to cry and Bankole quickly pick him up and tries to calm him down. Maami looks at the little boy and relaxes

MAAMI

Wemimo, fimi sile, mi o ni fowo kan mo (Wemimo leave me alone, I will touch her again)

Wemimo looks reluctant

ANN

Wemimo, the woman asked you to leave her alone, what are you doing?

WEMIMO

Maami… (Mother…)

MAAMI

Mi o ni fowo kan (I won’t touch her)

Wemimo sighed deeply and he releases her. Maami gently sits on Wemi’s bed looking at Imade intensely. Wemimo looks at alert as if waiting for when Maami will pounce on Imade again but instead Maami bursted into tear. She cried in abject sadness, tears pouring out of her eyes in full force making Wemimo to relax and Ann, looking at her in concern too. Imade whimpers as she gently slides down the wall until she reaches the floor, quietly crying too

MAAMI

What have I done to you, Imade? So funmi kini mose fun eh? Gbogbo nnkan tobi se fun omo nimo se fun, ebi o pa ri, ohun woso, mo ran eh losi ile iwe. Gbogbo hun to fun komo ni mofi ko eh Imade, mo so so so, mo ke ke ke, mo yan yan yan, osi papa doju timi ogboyun wale sugbon olorun (raising her hands up) to ri lala mi lori iwo ati aburo eh koje ko doju timi (points to Wemimo) omokinrin yi fe eh, obomi lasiri, obo eh lasiri. Ona kan pere to wale fi dupe lowo eh, ni aleyiyan, eh Imade? Eleyi to tuwaye ko ma yira nile koma bee, Ohun jawe fun, se o fe pami ni, Imade. (What did I do to you? I gave you everything a parent can give to a child. You were never hungry, you had clothes to wear, I sent you to a good school. I trained you the way a parent will train a child and yet you still decide to bring shame to me by getting pregnant unmarried but God Almighty who saw my suffering on you and your younger brother didn’t let you put me to shame. This younger man married you, he covered my shame, he covered yours and the only way you can think to appreciate him is to cheat on him right, Imade? And instead of you be begging for his forgiveness, you want to divorce him, do you want to kill me, Imade?)

Wemimo calls out to Maami in a sorrowful voice as she talks through her tears

WEMIMO

Maami…

Maami turns to Wemimo with her tears stained face

MAAMI

Wemimo….Omo ajero okinosa,

Omo osu keregbe lojurun

Omo ojo denu obara run

Omo ahere kete ekiti kete

Onisasi kojopa

Omo oyinbo osoku

Omo amororo ninu agbo

Omo onisu logba sinu pelebe

Omo ayio mekasun

WEMIMO

(In a sad, soft voice)Maami…

MAAMI

Iwo ni mabe (It is you I will beg)

Maami goes on her knees

MAAMI

 Bami dariji (Please forgive her)

Wemimo runs to pick her up

WEMIMO

Maami, e dide (Mother, please stand up)

Rubbing her two hands in front of him

MAAMI

Jo bami dariji, fiya mi, jo… Imade, ode ni kogbo rara (Please help me forgive her… Imade is a fool)

She looks back at Imade

MAAMI

Ewo eni ni moba bebe, abi o fe kiwa fun e ni foti mi ni (Look at who I am begging for or you do you want me to give another slap again)

Imade stands up and kneels next to her mother

MAAMI

Wemimo, jo dariji (Wemimo, please forgive her)

Wemimo sighed deeply in frustration

WEMIMO

Maami, e dide se (Mother, please stand up)

MAAMI

So funmi pe o ti dariji, ma dide (Tell me you have forgiven her and I will stand up)

Ann scoff in annoyance

ANN

This is not right

WEMIMO

Stay out of this

Ann ignored him and faces Maami looking angry

ANN

You are using the fact that he cannot say no to you to emotionally blackmail him back into this hell of a marriage

MAAMI

Anike, iwo lo soro bi eleyi, o ye koma bami bee ni (Anike, why are you talking like this, you should be helping me beg him)

ANN

Your daughter cheated on him, leyin gbogbo nnkan ti Wemimo se fun Imade, omo yi yale mo, (After everything Wemimo did for imade, your daughter cheated on him) Why should I beg for her?

WEMIMO

Damn it, Ann, I told you to stay out of this

ANN

You are my friend, if you won’t fight for yourself, I will fight for you, Maami, se mope awon mejeji o to bara su? (Do you know these two haven’t had sex?)

Maami opens her surprise

MAAMI

Koje je be (It can’t be true)

ANN

E bere lowo awon mejeji boya mo paro, Wemimo o si omo yi laso wo ri (Ask them if I am lying, Wemimo has not seen your daughter’s nakedness)

Maami looks between the couple

MAAMI

Se lotan ni? (Is this true?)

Imade looks away

MAAMI

Ah!

WEMIMO

Ann, please that is enough

ANN

I understand why you feel should fight for your daughter’s marriage, Maami but these two are not meant to be. You should let them go their separate ways

MAAMI

Is divorce that easy to you people, they have a son together? Do you think about what will happen to him?

ANN

He will be fine, moreover, Wemi is not even his son

WEMIMO

(Angry) Ann!

ANN

What?

WEMIMO

Please leave, you have caused enough commotion today

ANN

All I have done today is try to free you from this family

WEMIMO

I never asked for your help, did I?

Wemimo turns back to Maami

WEMIMO

Maami, e dide

He pulls her up

MAAMI

Wemimo, Wemimo is your son, I hope you know that

WEMIMO

Maami, I know, forgive Ann for running her mouth unchecked

MAAMI

She is angry as she should be as your friend but blood is not the only thing that make a man a father to a son. You may not be his father by blood but you have been a father to that boy in ways that his real father can never compare

WEMIMO

Maami, I know that

MAAMI

Good because I want you to look at that boy, wo omo ye, kode ronu ojo waju eh, kode joo bami dariji oponu ayarada towa legbe mi yi (Look at that child and think of his future and please forgive the fool kneeling next to me)

Wemimo looks at Wemi in the arms of Bankole

ANN

Wemimo, don’t fall for it

MAAMI

Bami dariji, mode fi da e loju pe, iru eh koni sele mo (Please forgive her and I promise you that this won’t happen again)

She shouts into Imade’s ears

MAAMI

Abo tu ma sele? (Or will it happen again?)

IMADE

Koni sele mo (It won’t happen again)

MAAMI

Jo bami dariji (Please forgive her)

WEMIMO

Maami, I understand that you are worried about Wemi’s upbringing but don’t worry, I will always be in his life but Imade does not love me, she is not happy with me

Maani scoffs

MAAMI

Ife? Kini ife? (Love? What is love?) When she decided to spread her legs for a man and get pregnant as an unmarried woman, she does not deserve to be happy

WEMIMO

Maami, please she made a mistake, she does not deserve to be unhappy for the rest of her life

Maami looks at Imade scornfully

MAAMI

I think he needs to hear you say you have fallen in love with him, ki lori so siye (What will you say about that?)

IMADE

I will make it work, Wemimo

WEMIMO

Imade, you are not happy with me, you are miserable. There is no making it work

MAAMI

Imade, to omokinrin yi o ba dariji eh ma koo eh lomo (If this young man does not forgive you, I will disown you)

Imade looks up in fright

WEMIMO

Maami, please

MAAMI

Oro eh ye mi, Wemimo (I understand you, Wemimo). I understand where you are coming from but no daughter of mine will cheat on her husband and remain my daughter

She picks up the divorce document from the bed and slams it in front of Imade on the floor

MAAMI

You can sign the divorce papers, Imade but you sign that, you cease to be my daughter.

Maami pick her bag from the chair and take few steps towards the door

WEMIMO

I forgive her

Maami stops and faces him. Wemimo picks up the divorce document from the floor and tears it into two

WEMIMO

I forgive her

Ann scoffs as Maami smiles brightly

MAAMI

Ose gan ni (Thank you very much)

Ann faces Bankole who is happy at the situation pissed off

BANKOLE

I know you are angry but lo..

ANN

Angry? No but I am sickened. I feel so disgusted at how your mother practically blackmailed Wemimo into staying married to your sister

WEMIMO

Ann, that was rude

ANN

Wemimo, please don’t say anything if you don’t want me leashing out here

 BANKOLE

Ann, pleas…

ANN

I know you think you saved your little family but you didn’t. You just postponed the inevitable. I want you to remember today because everything I told you outside, it is going to happen and when it does, I want you to know it is your fault

With that, Ann walked out

 Next on Why?

 BANKOLE

Just because he is not talking to anyone does not mean I shouldn’t try and reach to him

JO

Say he picks your call, there is nothing he can do at this point except bribe the judges. Is that what you want?

BANKOLE

Actually yes, because unlike you, I believe my sister is innocent and if getting Brother Wemimo to bribe a judge or threaten the jury is the only way to set her free, you can be rest assured that I am going to do it
