Previously on Why?
BANKOLE
Ann, pleas…
ANN
I know you think you saved your little family but you didn’t. You just postponed the inevitable. I want you to remember today because everything I told you outside, it is going to happen and when it does, I want you to know it is your fault
EPISODE 121
Jealousy aside
BACK TO PRESENT
Bankole who
suddenly remembered Ann’s word signed deeply with his hands on his face. Jo
looks up in concern from the document she is reading when she hears his guilt
laden sigh
JO
Hey!
Are you okay?
BANKOLE
This
is my fault, everything that is happening is my fault. If I had just let them
go their separate ways when they wanted, none of th…
JO
Bankole,
you can’t let what Shehu said get into your head
BANKOLE
It
is not just Shehu… Ann predicted that this was going to happen a long time ago
and she told me to remember that it was my fault
JO
She
is just a bitch
BANKOLE
But
she was right though, it was my fault
JO
Hey,
you don’t know that
BANKOLE
But
I do, if they had gotten divorced then, they would be with other people and be
leaving their best life but I just had to ruin it because I wanted a father
JO
Hey! you can’t put all of that on yourself, from the little I got from what happened
years ago, your sister and her ex-husband had multiple chances to go their
separate ways but they didn’t. So don’t put their mistakes on yourself
BANKOLE
But
at that moment in the hospital, they really wanted it and they would have
gone through with it if I didn’t interfere
Jo looks
frustrated at her failure to convince him otherwise. So she dropped the
document in her hand and faced her husband fully
JO
Okay
see it like this, if they had gotten divorced, would you have gone to Harvard
law?
BANKOLE
Yes,
I would, Ann would have made sure of it
The scowl on Jo’s face
deepens
JO
I
hate how you talk about her with so much affection, like she could do you no
wrong but when in fact she is the devil
She turns back to work
BANKOLE
You
are right though
JO
That
your sugar mummy is a devil, yes, I know that
BANKOLE
No,
I mean… you are right about Wemimo King, I don’t hate him
Jo looks up at her husband
in concern
JO
Babe,
I know that and I also know that what you hate is the fact that he left and didn’t look
back
Bankole sighed deeply
JO
But
can you blame him, what you sister did is something no woman should ever do to her
husband?
BANKOLE
But
he forgave her once
JO
Just
because he was magnanimous to forgive her the first time does not mean he will
the second time, after all he is human and human have their limits… enough with
the chit chat let get back to work
BANKOLE
Jo,
we are going to lose this case
JO
O
ye of little faith!
BANKOLE
This
is not about faith or belief, it is about the evidence and they all point to
her as the culprit
She gave him a skeptical look
BANKOLE
What?
You think she did it?
JO
Wait,
as her lawyers we are meant to set her free which I am totally done for but are
you sure she didn’t do it?
Bankole looks at her in
surprise
BANKOLE
Are
you kidding me?
JO
What?
You never asked her if she did it, not once
BANKOLE
Because
I know she didn’t do it but… after two years with her and I can’t believe you
would think she did it
JO
You
just asked me to look at the evidence few minutes ago, this is me looking at
both the evidence and the motive. That asshole wanted to destroy her and your
sister had everything to lose. I would have done the same if I was in her shoes
BANKOLE
You
really believe she did it
JO
I
just looked at….
BANKOLE
Enough with the argument, all that matter is that we have the same goal
JO
Exactly
BANKOLE
At
the rate we are going, we are definitely losing the case
JO
We
just need to get witnesses to ta…
BANKOLE
But
we are not getting it, so we need to move on from that
JO
So
what do we do next?
BANKOLE
We
find a way to knock out the evidence
JO
We
visited that once but it didn’t work
BANKOLE
It
would have worked with Ann
Jo become angry
JO
I
can see you are doing your possible best to piss me off
Bankole becomes annoyed
BANKOLE
Can
you put your jealousy aside for a second and work with me?
JO
You
think this is just jealousy because I think you just implied that she can do a
better job than me
BANKOLE
I
didn’t mean that… but maybe, I do mean that
Jo scoffs
BANKOLE
She
is among the first three high ranked lawyers in the country, so how can you
better than her?
JO
Fuck
you and the reason why she is among the first three is because she is dirty
BANKOLE
Yes,
she plays dirty but who knows that?
JO
I
know
BANKOLE
You
knowing, does it leave a dent on her success?
JO
So
what? Do you want to bring her in on the case because the last time I checked,
she is against your sister and even if you manage to change her mind, I will
divorce you if….
Bankole cuts in sharply
BANKOLE
Enough
with your threats, I am not asking her help but I am going to call Brother
Wemimo and ask for his help
Jo looks at her husband in
confusion
JO
What?
BANKOLE
I
need his help
JO
No
one knows where he is, no one has spoken to him in two years
BANKOLE
That
is not true, Aunty Bebii is contact with him or else, she won’t be running
KINGS
JO
Say
she is, I don’t think she will tell you
BANKOLE
No,
she won’t and that is why I am going to call him
JO
This
is just a waste of time, he won’t pick your call
Bnakole picks his phone up
BANKOLE
Just
because he is not talking to anyone does not mean I shouldn’t try and reach out
to him
He stands
up from his chair and walked past his wife. He tries to open the striding door
that leads to the balcony of his house
JO
Say
he picks your call, there is nothing he can do at this point except bribe the
judge. Is that what you want?
Bankole scoffs and turns to
his wife
BANKOLE
Actually
yes, because unlike you, I believe my sister is innocent and if getting Brother
Wemimo to bribe a judge or threaten the jury is the only way to set her free,
you can be rest assured that I am going to do it
He opened
the sliding door and the moment he did that, a gush of fresh cool air blown at
him before he stepped into out to the balcony. He snorts hard trying to calm
himself down while looking at full moon outside. From his balcony, he can see
the different houses in Ibadan with their light on and different cars passing
on the street.
He presses
some buttons on his phone and bring it to his ear. After a few second, a voice
informed him that the phone is switched off. He opens his Whatapp application
and decide to leave him a voice note
BANKOLE
Hello
brother Wemimo, I know it has….
