On the road from Lagos 28: The Prison 2

BACK TO PRESENT

INT. INSIDE THE PRISON-AFTERNOON

Rhema lies on the floor as Femi signals with his finger. On reaching finger 3, Rhema starts to shout in pain

RHEMA

My stomach, helpppp, my stomach, please make it stop

Femi starts to bang the door

FEMI

Help, help, something is wrong with her

A guard comes to the door

GUARD

What is it?

FEMI

Her stomach is paining her, open the door and get her a doctor

The guard looks at Rhema rolling on the floor, then he walks away, the party looks shocked

FEMI

Are you not going to open the door?

GUARD

No am not

FEMI

She could died

GUARD

Then let her die

The guard walks away, Cece stands up in fury

JAMIN

So they are just going to let her die there

CECE

Which means they are not going to let us go (face Jamin) do you now believe us when we say that we are going to be used as sacrifice

Femi looks so angry as he punch the wall

FEMI

Our escape plan just flew through the roof

Cece sits next Oba-Abass, Oba-Abass looks at Remilekun

OBA-ABASS

Are you going to Zaria to visit your grandma?

Remilekun looks surprise while Cece looks curious

REMILEKUN

How did you know?

OBA-ABASS

Your mother is from Zaria, so I figured that you were going to visit your maternal grandma

REMILEKUN

Actually am not going to visit, I intend on starting a life there

Oba-Abass smiles brightly

OBA-ABASS

Really? Your mom will be very happy

REMILEKUN

How do you know that?

OBA-ABASS

It was what your mother ever wanted

REMILEKUN

I didn’t know you were this close to her

OBA-ABASS

I don’t know about close but let say I know one or two important things about her life

Remilekun nods

OBA-ABASS

And I didn’t get to know you became I was not always around and when I am in Lagos, I will be so busy that I won’t even remember to eat two square meal

Remilekun sighs deeply and she sees Cece staring at her

REMILEKUN

What is it?

CECE

Did you know that your mother studied business?

REMILEKUN

I thought you said you didn’t want to talk to be about my mother

CECE

Did you know that your mother studied business at the Ahamadu Bello before she studied Law at the University of Lagos? (Remilekun just stares at Cece) you didn’t know did you? (Cece scoffs) you are no different from your father

Remilekun speaks in anger

REMILEKUN

You know nothing about me or my father

CECE

Oh please I know plenty, you used to be very sick as a child. How can I forget the day when your mother left you with me to take a test she missed on? Then you started seizing again, you had no idea how scared I was as I ran to the school clinic with you on my back with no shoes on my feet, praying to God that you don’t die

REMILEKUN

You two were classmates?

Selma chuckles sadly and she looks up

CECE

Do you know how bizarre it is for you to bring a three year old child to the class and when your mother was asked why she will do that, she will say that she does not trust the nannies to give you the care you need in case you seize again. I remember the day she missed an exam because you got sick…again. That woman will do anything for you, and yet you have done nothing for her

REMILEKUN

What do you mean have done nothing for her, I am going to Zaria like she wanted me to

CECE

No, I believe you are going to spite your father because of his new wife

Remilekun looks like she got cut stealing, Cece scoffs

CECE

I was hoping I was wrong, that expression says I am right (she scoffs and looks up) Selma, your life was no better than mine and you always act all high and mighty to me….(she looks at Remilekun angrily) I repeat myself and I stand on it, you are no different from your cheating ass father

Remilekun looks shocked at what Cece said

REMILEKUN

You knew he was cheating on my mom

CECE

Of course I know, I am his lawyer and apparently you know too. (sighs) I really don’t know how your mom could stand a man like your father

REMILEKUN

She found out too

CECE

Of course she is, she is not qualified to be called the best lawyer in Nigeria if she didn’t know about that

Tears finds their way down Remilekun’s face

REMILEKUN

I tried…my…be…best

JAMIN

What best?

REMILEKUN

I tried my best to make sure she didn’t find out, I really tried because I knew it will hurt her if she found out

CECE

Maybe you did love her

Remilekun talks through her tears with abject sadness

REMILEKUN

Of course I love her, she is my mother. I may not know anything about her but I love her very much and I will never want to hurt her intentionally. You have no idea how much I miss her and I will do anything to see her again

CECE

Too late

OBA-ABASS

Stop it Cece

Oba-Abass moves closer to Remilekun and hugs her close to his chest

OBA-ABASS

Stop crying Remi, am sure mother know that you love her
