I am asking you to help me help you win your election
(Nate and Rere were standing as they talk in his office)
Nate: absolutely not
Rere: you have to consider it Mr President
Nate: there will be another sponsor, find them
Rere: we don’t have time to find another sponsor Mr President, the primary is less than a month. Finding another desperate sponsor is going to take time
Nate: obviously this sponsor is not desperate enough if he wants a sit down with me
Rere: trust me he is, he is just taking his time
Nate: for what exactly?
Rere: he is trying to sweat us out and see if he can get more than a monopoly (Nate paces away from her unconfused, she walks behind him) trust me, Mr President, he will fund us if you give him the monopoly
Nate: (in a loud voice) I am not giving him the monopoly, no matter how dire my situation is. Giving him the monopoly will be a mistake, there is a reason why the monopoly was not given to anyone
Rere: then promise to give him the monopoly, at least give him a promise
Nate: (looking confused) what are you saying? Don’t you hear….
Rere: I said promise him the monopoly, you don’t have to give it to him
Nate: are you saying I should lie to him
Rere: we are in Nigeria Mr President, politicians make promises that they can’t and will never fulfil all the time
Nate: what you are asking me to do is wrong?
Rere: I am asking you to help me help you win your election
Nate: what if it backfires?
Rere: I will make sure it does not
Nate: Alright, set up a meeting
Rere: I will do that sir (he goes back to his seat and sits down. Rere walks to his table with a file she brought out of her handbag and drop the file in his front)
Nate: (looks at Rere and opens the file) what is this?
Rere: I recommend Senator Audu as the next secretary of the state
Nate: (closes the file and pushes it back to Rere) it is not your place to recommend a member of my cabinet to me
Rere: but it is my place to find a way for you to win your election. (He looks at her) Senator Audu is a respected Hausa man with influence in the party and in Senate. Bring him close to you and make him an ally. He will deliver the votes you need in the north at the primary to you
Nate: I already promise Senator Diekola the position
Rere: Funmi Diekola is a Yoruba woman that is useless to you right now, give the position to Audu
Nate: I made a promise
Rere: politicians don’t already keep their promise, I am sure she will understand
Nate: I will think about it
Rere: and I hope you make a good choice
Nate: I will get back to you
Rere: (she goes back to the cushion and took her hand
Nate: no, I will handle it
Rere: please make him open his pocket
Nate: I will do the best I can (she leaves)
