EPISODE 48

INT. A CLINIC’S WAITING ROOM- DAWN

Cece stands up and walks out to the direction of the noise. Then she sees an angry man standing next to Jamin while Selma sits on the bed. Selma quickly remove the bed sheet on the bed to cover her hair

JAMIN

It is not her fault, we needed her Niqab to cover the baby

FARUK AUDU

No matter what, a woman should never open her hair

Jamin raises his voice in anger

JAMIN

And what will you have her do when the survival of the baby depends on her

NIMAH

Jamin, don’t fight with Baba Akeem again. He is right I should never have opened my hair

Jamin looks so pissed now but he tries to control himself

JAMIN

Of course, Baba Akeem is always right

Jamin storms out of the room and walks outside. He screams with anger as Cece watch him from afar. Jamin sits on the floor as he holds his head in his hand

FLASHBACK- JAMIN- TWO YEARS AGO

INT. NIMAH’S COMPOUND- MORNING

Jamin sits on a bench under the mango tree in the compound. Few minutes later, he sees Selma walking toward him and he jumps up from the bench.

JAMIN

How is it? Is she going to get a divorce?

SELMA JOHNSON

No, she is not

Jamin looks disappointed

JAMIN

Fuck!

SELMA JOHNSON

Jamin, I know this is a setback

JAMIN

Setback? That man can kill her at anytime

SELMA JOHNSON

Yes I know that but it has to be her decision. You can’t force her to do what she does not want

JAMIN

So are you saying I can’t do anything?

SELMA JOHNSON

Of course there is plenty for you to do. You need to be there for her. Trust me that doll that she is stabbing will be her husband one day

JAMIN

I will like that very much

SELMA JOHNSON

But that will only end up with her in jail. You need to be there for her, so she knows she is not in it alone

BACK TO PRESENT

Jamin relaxes and sighs heavily

INT. INSIDE THE CLINIC- MORNING

Faruk Audu keeps ranting about the Niqab, Nimah looks frustrated

NIMAH

I am sorry Baba Akeem

FARUK AUDU

No matter what, you should never have removed your niqab

Nimah snaps and talks in anger

NIMAH

What did I do that was so wrong? I helped a baby, why is it so wrong?

Faruk Audu slaps her hard on the face which gives a resounding sound, Nimah holds her face in a pain. The nurse enters at that moment

NURSE

This is the discharge paper

FARUK AUDU

Thank you

The nurse sees Nimah holding her face

NURSE

Are you okay Ma’am?

FARUK AUDU

Yes she is okay

The nurse leaves

FARUK AUDU

Let go

FLASHBACK- NIMAH- TWO YEARS AGO

EXT. NIMAH BACKYARD-MORNING

Selma walks to the stabbed male doll and she touches it

NIMAH

No matter what you say, I am not getting a divorce

SELMA JOHNSON

I know…..but I give to you, your knife skill is great

NIMAH

What?

Selma faces her

SELMA JOHNSON

But who are you trying to stab? Your husband?

NIMAH

I think you should leave

SELMA JOHNSON

You need to leave this man for your own good and for the good of your son

NIMAH

Who do think is making me stay in this marriage? I am staying for my son. If I leave, Baba Akeem will take Akeem from me

SELMA JOHNSON

That is where I come in, I will make sure that it does not happen

NIMAH

Moreover a boy needs his father growing up

SELMA JOHNSON

The only thing your husband will teach your son is how to beat a woman, is that what you want for Akeem? To be like your husband

NIMAH

I understand where you are coming from but if even if you can get Akeem for me, Baba Akeem will get him back. I can’t risk having my son growing up without me

SELMA JOHNSON

Your son will end up growing without you if you stay in the marriage because one day you will stab your husband with that knife you are holding. If you are lucky, your husband will die and someone else maybe your mother will raise your son the right way or you might be unlucky and your husband survive, then another woman gets to raise your son, either way, you don’t get to raise your son.

NIMAH

A woman’s place is with her husband forever and ever

SELMA JOHNSON

All I hear from you are excuses, you are scared to face your husband, (Selma sighs and holds her hand) I have a daughter who will grow up to be a beautiful woman and it will kill me to see her in a situation like yours. Your brother is dying seeing you like this, now think of how your mother will feel if she sees you like this. Even if not for your sake or your mother’s, let me help you for your son because he will grow up to be violent like his father if you continue to stay in this marriage.
