I won’t get my hopes high
(Rere and Roti enters into a bar at around 7 in the night, they walk towards an elderly couple in their sixties. This couple are talking and laughing together)
Rere: (smiling) Senator Ameberu
Ameberu: hello Shapiro
Roti: good evening sir
Ameberu: (smiling) Rotimi, long time no see. Please have your seat (they both sit) this is my wife, Subomi Ameberu
Rere: nice to meet you Mrs Ameberu
Bomi: oh please, call me Bomi. You are prettier in person
Rere: thank you (smiles)
Roti: Senator we are so sorry about not working for you
Ameberu: it is fine, the party assured me that you will be working for me on the next election after this
Rere: yes we are
Ameberu: then all is in the past (his phone rings) sweetheart let me pick this call
Bomi: alright (he pecks her cheeks, Ameberu leaves the table)
Rere: how long have you two been married?
Bomi: thirty two years
Rere: wow that is a long time for two couples with careers to be married
Bomi: all a marriage needs is love and understanding, Olu and I are still married because we both love and understand each other. When my husband said he was inviting you for a drink I thought you would come with your husband
Rere: my husband is working on a case in Lagos
Bomi: oh yes, he told me
Roti: you know him
Bomi: yes, he is my bank’s attorney
Rere: oh I see
Bomi: (smiling) you know you are lucky to have him (Rere smiles) he is a very good man, it is rare to see someone of his character in today’s world. I match made him with my daughter once
Rere: really? (Bomi nods) and what happened?
Bomi: they told me that they were not compatible as a couple but as good friends
Rere: (smiling) it happens (Ameberu comes back)
Ameberu: sorry for the delay
Roti: it is fine
Ameberu: as to why we are here, tell that father of yours that he has nothing to worry about, my state will vote for him
Rere: thank you sir
Ameberu: we should leave
Roti: I hope you are not leaving because of us
Bomi: no, not at all. We are going to watch a movie at the cinema and it is starting soon
Rere: alright then we shouldn’t keep you waiting
Bomi: (she hugs Rere) it is nice meeting you and I look forward to working with you
Rere: me too (they leave. Rere sit down back)
Roti: should we leave too?
Rere: am not eager to go back to an empty house
Roti: me too, I will get us some drink
Rere: that will be good (Roti leave, Rere picks her phone and dials a number, but there was no response and she keeps dialling the number. She drops the phone on the table when she sees Roti coming back with to the table)
Roti: (sits down) is Alex still not picking your calls?
Rere: no he is not (she sips her drink) not that I blame him
Roti: give him time, he will come back
Rere: it has been two month, the Alex that loved me would have been back
Roti: he still loves you
Rere: I killed the man’s child, if I was in his shoes, I would do worse
Roti: he is a man who still married you even after he found out you used him to get to his father, he will be back
Rere: do you know the worst of it all, if I time travel back to 8 months ago, I think I will still abort my baby
Roti: I don’t know what to say to that
Rere: I don’t know what is wrong with me
Roti: are you really going to work for Ameberu?
Rere: you are going to
Roti: what about you?
Rere: I have never envisioned a future past seeing Ehosa died for myself
Roti: are you serious?
Rere: yes, after all of this is over, I don’t know what comes next
Roti: there are many things you can
Rere: yes, I can write a book or travel round the world, I have the money to do that
Roti: or maybe you go to Hawali with Alex
Rere: (chuckles sadly) I won’t get my hopes high
