A place in my heart
The black woman still reading from the book as the white woman listens
THE BLACK WOMAN: Rere shed bitter tears on this when she realised that she has finally lost Alex. She left Hawaii without getting to talk to him but she goes to Hawaii every year on her birthday where she watch Alex live the life he wanted to live with her with another woman (she looks up and smiles sadly)
THE WHITE WOMAN: (looking so sad) I was right, he moved on
THE BLACK WOMAN: I am sorry
THE WHITE WOMAN: don’t be sorry, the good thing is that it is not real, it is just a story
THE BLACK WOMAN: if it is, why do you look so sad?
THE WHITE WOMAN: I just feel that if this is a true life situation, Rere will be in so much pain
THE BLACK WOMAN: yes she will be
OVERHEAD SPEAKER: good evening ladies and gentlemen, we have reached Lagos and we are about to land in Murtiala Mohammed Airport. So fasten your seat belt and relax (everybody on the plane starts to do as told)
THE WHITE WOMAN: (fasten her seat belt and she looks over at the black woman) do you think she will still talk to Alex?
THE BLACK WOMAN: (she opens her mouth to response when a hostess interrupt to talk to the white woman. The black woman looks so sad again, in a second, she looks lost)
FLASHBACK
EXT. SOMEWHERE IN HAWAII
(THE BLACK WOMAN sits at the back seat as she watch a house. Few minutes later a car parks in front of this house and a man in his late forties comes out. THE BLACK WOMAN comes out of her car and the man turns to her. He looks shocked to see her)
Alex: Rere!
Rere (THE BLACK WOMAN): hello Alex
Alex: what are you doing here?
Rere: you are supposed to say hello Rere, then I will say hello Alex, it has been a long time because 12 years is a long time
Alex: I am sorry, I was just surprised to see you
Rere: I get that
Alex: hello Rere (Rere nods) come in (Alex leads Rere into his house) please sit (she sits) what can I get you?
Rere: water will fine
Alex: I will be right back
Rere: (she looks around to see different pictures hanging on the wall, she stand up and picks up a framed picture from the table. This is a picture of Alex and Arin with their three boys. She smiles at the picture as Alex walks into the living with a cup of water. He stops when he sees Rere with the framed picture. Rere smiles at him) living the dream huh? (Alex drops the cup of water on the table) you have a beautiful family Alex (she walks back to the seat and sits down)
Alex: thank you (he sits opposite her. Rere reaches for the cup with a shaking hand and Alex sees this) are you okay? (Rere gives no response as she drinks the water and drops the cup back on the table) Rere?
Rere: no am not okay, I have cancer
Alex: (with a shocked look) what?
Rere: Cancer of the lung
Alex: you never stopped smoking (Rere nods) I thought you said you only smoke when you are stressed, how on earth do you have cancer?
Rere: over the years, the rate at which I get stressed is almost the same with the rate at which I breathe
Alex: but you look well
Rere: with a little money, you can make a corpse look like a human being again
Alex: how many years do you have left (Rere looks at him and smiles) how many months Rere? (No response) weeks?
Rere: (sigh heavily) it will be any time now
Alex: I am so sorry
Rere: no don’t be, I have to lie on my bed the way I laid it (smiles sadly) I have been coming to your place for over nine years now watching you live the life you always wanted
Alex: why didn’t you try talking to me?
Rere: I don’t know, maybe it was because I saw no point in it or maybe because, I had no courage to face you
Alex: we are talking now, what changed?
Rere: because I feel that this might be the last chance I have to talk to you and I think I will regret it if I don’t get to tell you that your father didn’t intend to kill my father
Alex: what?
Rere: it was a mistake
Alex: you were so sure he did it deliberately
Rere: I was a kid in pain and I only saw him shot my father but the last time I saw him, the expression on his face when I confronted him, said everything. I think my father’s death took a lot from him and also changed him from the loving father he once was.
Alex: he still killed your father
Rere: but he showed remorse, if I can find a place in my heart to forgive him, you should also
Alex: so you came here to tell me that my father repented?
Rere: yes and also to tell you that I am sorry for everything that I put you through
Alex: I forgave you a long time ago Rere
Rere: (she smiles sadly) you know my name means God is very favourable (pause) but he has not shown me any favour, all I ever wanted was justice for my father, what was so bad with that?
Alex: getting justice is not wrong but the way by which you got your justice was wrong. You used everybody Rere and you even killed our own child for your justice. It was just wrong
Rere: (she stand up and picks her bag up) good bye Alex (she walks towards the door)
Alex: (with a sad look) Rere,
Rere: (opens the door and looks back at him) I waited for a very long time for your photo exhibition but it never happened, I hope when I am gone, it happens (she smiles and walks out of the door)
